LABOUR MARKET.
THE POSITION IN AUCKLAND. (BY TE(.EQBArn.'—SrnCIAI. COttHRSroNDENT.I , Auckland, May' 29. Inquiry at i the Labour's Department's office shows that tlio statu of tho labour market in Auckland is much bettor than that in Wellington. There has been an improvement in tlio building trade as far as masons nro corieerned,, lmt it is slight. Tlio labour market is dull, duller than usual at this timo 'of' tho year. Tliero is little demand from tho country, and tho time is approaching when men begin to drift to towiv There is no opening for mqti on co-operative, works. Of 71 men placed' by the Auckland office during tho month diided May 20, only 14' were sent to Government works, tlio remainder receiving private employment. During last week 1-14 men, registered' tlioir names, 48 of them being married; and work was found for 14. A fair number of immigrants arc calling, nnd .often it is stated they succeed in getting; work where New Zealnuders foil, becauso they aro ready to turn their hand to anything. Unfortunately, some of tho unemployed, have a strong relish for town life, and refuse to go to the country, or, if they go, do not atay thoro long.
