...The most satisfactory item of news'this weok is the striking of an artesian flow of water in tho municipal experimental : bore. , At the lato counoil meeting some' of ' the members' uoiisideredit mere waste of money, to go on sinking, as a supply would never be obtained. That it is wiser to.prophesy after the event than before has'been exemplified in this instance. The bore is now down to a. depth of 470 ft., and the water is'rising, and overflowing .'3ft. above the 6urface. The contractor is still sinking, and is hopeful that the flow will increase in volume and force. The. faot that an artesian supply ofexcellent water has , been obtained, even at such a depth,, materially simplifies the water 'supply and drainage' schemes now before tho council. ■•• . .■ .-.'•'' ■ .

It is unofficisllv reported that the Government, has abandoned its intention, of diverting the Department's coal trade from this port. The smart action taken by the Harbour, Board and Chamber of Commerce when the rumour was first circulated evidently had an effect. Our now Post Office is now nearing completion. It is suggested that the Premier will visit Foxton next month -for the opening ceremony. It is hoped'that Sir, Joseph Ward will be able to.payns a visit, us thero are one 01 two matters of public interest to which his attention might bo called, and "which would undoubtedly be understood better by the Premier's personal attention than after tomes of correspondence. ; ' . The Boilway Department have, at last, but not till confidorablo; pressnrn was brought to bear upon'them. decided to light up the railway wharf and stntion platform with pas. For many months now pas has been installed into public offices, shops,-and , most of the residence, but the darkness enfolding our primitive railway platform is broken only by ,the fitful spark of an indifferent keroeen* lamp, and the almost continuous phosnhorescent glow of the waiting emokers, striking matches to keep their pipes , alight, or when the train arrives—as it sometimes docs—leeking for personal luggage through, the heterogeneous mass piled upon the platform. Happily this is now to be,.changed, and in the .near tutors we mar anticipate & degree ol_

illumination that will be as tho shining of Sol to the grass darkness that has hitherto been our benighted experience. The school committee met on Thursday ovening last. The Rev. G. Aitken was induced to undertake ■ the secretarial duties for another year, tho members unanimously .expressing their appreciation of the satisfactory manner in which that eentleman had carried out tho duties during the past year. An application on behalf of local ministers of- religion was made for the use of tho school, outside legal school hours, but yet within the hours of instruction, to impart Bible instruction to he children of parents who desired that they should receive such instruction. After a short discussion, it was decided to postpone consideration of tho subject till the next meeting of the committee in June. The statement mado by your Palmerston correspondent that an effort was being made to form a shipping company in Palmerston North, the ship or ship" of which would trade to and from the port ii Foxton, is being favourably commented on here. The promoters of the project would hase no difficulty in interesting local enterprise in the scheme, and there seems to be no .reason why a profitable and useful not be established between Foxton and other New Zealand ports. It is interesting to note, even, with a dopreesed market, Foxton main tains its position as a hemp producer. During last month 200 Bales in excess of April, 1908, were graded at the local sheds. There is also a report that moat of' the loea} mills will continue working through the winter if they succeed in securing supplies of green leaf. The Moutoa Syndicate's, flax property will close on June 15 for the winter months, and-if millers are successful, as it is hoped they will be, in obtaining supplies from outside sources for that period, the town and suburbs will largely benefit.
