AUCKLAND NEWS.

Cbl MLBfIEAPa—fiPIOAL OOEEESFOITDBNT.J Auokland, May 7.. Grave complaints are made by Man gore farmers about the conduct of parties shooting through that district. Last week Mr. Tims, whoso farm is situated at the southern end of Mangoro, found that a -valuable cow had' been killed.; Ho had missed the animal for two or three days, and on searching found her .lying dead, her side riddled .with gun shot. Last Sunday a shooting party robbed a hen's nest ind cooked the eggs 'for their midday meal on Mr. Tiins's .farm. About twelve months ago, Mr. Goghlan Dad a valuable, cow shot, and the culprit was never discovered. Farmers generally 'in the Mangore and Papatoitoi districts readily consent _to risitors shooting over their farms, but it is thought that 1 if a man cannot hit anything less than a oow he certainly ought not to go shooting. - Speaking at a public function in favour of universal training, Mr. C. J. Parr,', chairman of tho Auckland Education Board; said: "Tho fact that there is.no such schemo in operation at the present time is, I think, to be deplored by every man and woman in this country. I hope that the people of this province will see that this most important question is properly ventilated in Parliament during the coming session, and that a proper solution is arrived 1 at, and will see to it that tho men who fail them in this great national emergency aro not returned at the next election. _ There is .no question of such supremo importance before the public at the present time as that of national defence, and I do hope that the public men of tho Dominion will be brought to a sense of their responsibilities." Tho trustees of .the Knox Estate, propose to apply to the Supreme Court for permission to distribute the estate notwithstanding the contingent, liability existing on shares in public _ companies. If the judgo. declines to authorise this, v the payment of legacies must bo postponed until the expiration .of. twelve nfopths :from .the..date of the disposal of the shares, as the contingent liability will continue for that period. As a sumis involved, tho trustees feel that they would not bo justified in paying tho legacies during its continuance. They are taking steps to dispose of the shares by ; publio tender, and tho application to tho Supreme Court will bo made without delay. 'With regard to tho Home for Incurablcs, for which tho Jato Mrs. Knox left £20,000, the trustees are advertising for a suitable site.
