BRIEF BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. The ,' following are brief biographical sketches of the five candidates for the Wellington Mayoralty
Hardlo-Shaw, Photo. DR. NEWMAN. Dr. A. K. Newman was bom in India in 1849, and i$ a eon of Captain A. Newman, H.E.I.C.S. He arrived in New Zealand in 1853 S He was educated at Bath, Eng.; Guy's Hospital (house surgeon); M.R.C.B. (Eng.), L.R.C.P;, M.8., CM. (Aberdeen); returned to New Zealand 1875; entered mercantile life,' Wellington.' He has been a member of the Education Board, Wellington. College Governors, City Council, Wellington A; and P. Association (president); M.P? Thorndon, 1884-90; Hutt, 1890-93; Wellington Suburbs/ 1893-96; some time ago he proposed the'reservation of Tongariro National Park, which has since* been carried out. He has always taken- a great interest in athletio sports.
Haxdle-81iaw. Photo. • MR. FISHER. Mr. F. M. B. Fieher, J.P., M.P., was born on December 22, 1877; he is the son of the. late Mr. ■' George Fisher, H.P. He was appointed lieutenant of the New-Zealand Volunteer Force, August, 1900; captain, December 5, 1900; captain" New Zealand Federal Contingent, 1901; captain and second in command of the 2nd. Battalion 10th Contingent in South Africa (medal and' clasp); at the by-election of April 6, 1905, Sir. Fisher was elected to represent Wellington City in the House of Representatives; ■;. on December 6, 1906 (general election), he was elected to represent Wellington' Central; April -24, 1907, elected to Wellington City Council; represented Canterbury province at football and athletics (weight-putting and jumps); member of New.Zeajand tennis,team, 1903; runner-up Australasian lawn tennis championship singles, .1906-7; holder of championship singles Thorndon and Wellington Clubs, and provincial championship doubles, 1907; holder of New Zealand men's championship doubles (three times);: championship combined (three times). Mr. Fisher successfully contested the Wellington.Central seat afc the last general election
Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P. for Hutt, barnstor and solicitor, was born in Wellington m 1870. He is a son of tho late Dr. J. G. F. Wilford Lower Hutt, and was admitted to the bar in 1891; he joined Mr. W. L. Travers, but subsequently started legal business on his own account. Hβ unsuccessfully contested the Wellington Suburbs seat against Dr. Nnwmari in 1893; he defeated the Hon. T. W.
Hislop forthe same seat inlß96,but wae unseated. •Mγ. Wilford was returned for Wellington Suburbs'in 1900, and for Hntt in 1903, which constituency ho has represented up to the present time. ' ■ Mr/ ;Wilford was elected a member of the Wellington Harbour Board in July, 1900.. Ho became chairmanon February 25, 1908, and was re-elected chairman on February 23, 1009. .
MB. BOUTON. , Mr. F. G. Bolton was born on November
16, 1866, at Wellington, and is a son of Mr. G«o. Bolton, a pioneer of 1841. He passed his solicitor's examination at 19, and his barrister's ( the following year. Mr. Bolton. has been. : practising his profession since 1890, and he is senior partner in the firm of Bolton and Organ. '. Ho has been Mayor of Eastbourne since its separation from tho Hutt_ County , three years ago, and on the last tw'o occasions he was returned unopposed. He has been a member of the Hospital Trustees, Benevolent Trustees, and is one of the members of the Wellington Harbour Board elected by the citizens. Mr. Bolton. contested i Wellington • North seat at the last. general election, but was defeated at the second ballot. .-■•' • ■■■ •■■. -'■' ■'■ \

MR. JOHN RICC, M.L.C. Mr. John Rigg, M.L.0., ! was born at St. Kflda, Melbourne, in/1858, and was educated in Port Chalmers and Wellington. He was apprenticed as a compositor in the Government Printing Office in Wellington, in 1872; served out the full term (six years); and for 14 years afterwards worked at his trade in the State Printing Works. He became an office-bearer in the Tjyographical Society, holding the positions or secretary and president at different times j ■ was also president of the Tailoresses'/Union and the' Trades Council. He was appointed to the Legislative Council during tne Seddon Administration in 1893 for a seven-year term, and was reappointed at its expiration. Mr. Rigg was also the first president of the now defunct Independent Political Labour League, and at present he is editor of the new Wellington Labour paper,'"The Weekly Herald." '
