PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENTS.

The following appointments to the Professorial Staff were made at the meeting of the Victoria College Council yesterday:— Professor of Physics—Mr. Thomas Howell Laby, 8.A., of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Lecturer in Geology—Mr. Charles A. Cotton, M.Sc, New Zeahmd. •- Professor Laby has had a distinquished career in research work at Cambridge; ho was research exhibitioner at Emmanuel College, and is now at Cavendish Laboratory under Sir J. J. Thomson. During the period 1901-1904, he was demonstrator in physics at Sydney University (he is an old Sydney boy, and went Home as winner of the 1851 Research Exhibition Scholarship, - the same honour which foil to Professor' Rutherford). - Professor Lnby: was also "Joule Student" of the Royal Society. His nominators were Professor Rutherford, Professor Callender, and the Hon. Mr. Hall-Jones, New Zealand High Commissioner in London. , , Mr. Cotton is a ,New Zealnnder, with high honours in geological study,, invariably taking "firsts" in : his classes. He entered the University as a junior scholar, and after a- senior scholar, and Sir George Grey Scholar. He graduated BiSc. and-M.Sc, and in 1908 oeoamo director of the Coromandel School of Mines. Both are quite young men, neither being thirty years of age. / ■ -.
