Weddings, At the Wesleyan Church, Greytown, on Saturday, Mr. E. J. Haigh was married to Miss Kate Poad, of Petone, the. Rev. W. J. Elliott officiating. Misses Edna Udy and Maud Haigh, with two tiny children, Misses Thejma Udy and Telso Johnson, wore bridesmaids, I and Mr. Jamos Haigh was best man. The bride was given, away by Mr. Hart Udy. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Haigh will live in the Greytown district, where Mr. Haigh has a farm. On Wednesday last, at Mangatahioka, in tho Methodist Church, Miss Rubina Polglase, only daughter.of Mr. and Mrs. J.. Polglase, of Mangatainoka, was married by the Rov. B. N. Ginger to Mr. J. Mathers, of Hamilton. The bridesmaids were Misses E. Herrick,, K.Drummond, and Ella Polglaso, cousin's and niece of the bride. Mr. G. Mathers acted as best man, and Mr. H. Polglaso as groomsman. Miss Asbby, who was at the organ, played the " Wedding March " as tho bridal party left the church. -After the ceremony a wedding breakfast was held in the Library Hall, in which/ later on, a danco was also held. Miss Dorothy Hamcr's Danco, It was a very enjoyable danco that was given on Saturday night in the Masonic Hall by Miss Dorothy Hamer, as a farewell to her young friends. Dancing .'began early, as many of the guests, were quite young, and ended before midnight. Mrs. Hamer received in a handsome frockof bluo velvet, trimmed with oriental embroidery and gold tassels. Miss Dorothy Hamer wore a pretty frock of painted net over pink silk. At tho end of tho evening the guests gave threo cheers for Mrs. and Miss Hamer, and for tho baby, who was christened tho day before. Among those present were Mrs. and Miss Seddon and Captain Scddon, Mrs. -and Miss do CastrtfJ Mr. and Mrs. Knox Gilmor, Mr. Donne, Professor and Miss Kirk, Miss Dimant, Mr. and Miss Beere, Miss Hyde, and Mr. and Mrs. Calender, while the younger guests included the Misses Holmes (2), K. Clayton, Muir C 2), C. Morice, L. Dyer, V. Curnow, Kirk (2), J. Purdy, Myers (2), Field (2), and Haywood, and Master P. "Ward. A Handkerchief Tea. Miss Edith Luke, whoso marriago to Mr. Laurence Birhs takes place on 'Thursday week, was entertained at a farewell tea on Saturday afternoon by Miss Ballinger and Miss Prendeville, at Miss Ballinger's home in Boulcott Street. A number of girls werp present, and : they spent most of jthe time over; very ingenious' competitions. Recitations wore given by Miss Flux and Miss Winder ; Miss Gilbert gave a pianoforte solo, and Miss Martin sang. It was a handkerchief tea, and with each handkerchief the guests had brought' a limerick, which-was supposed to deal with married life, its joys or trials. Some of- them wore very clever and amusing. The prize was won by Miss Marjorio M'Mastors, of Auckland. A second competition, which was won by Miss Hitchcock, was rather elaborate. The guests had to write down in a given time the names of as many articles for a dresser beginning with a given letter as they could think of, and if they had put down impossiblo words thoy had to explain how theso things came to be put on a dresser. The explanations gave risb to much amusement. For the third competition the guests were given, 'an appropriate word of five letters, and asked to'make up a telegram with those letters , as initials, and this again proved ..very amusing. Miss Ballinger received in a white muslin frock, and Miss Prendeville wore a fawn cloth costumo with cream lace. , Miss Luke's frock was of wine■coloured chiffon taffetas, trimmed with bands i of velvet and white lace. Miss Borlase's Dance. A very enjoyable dance was given on Saturday evening in tho Goring Street Hall by Miss Borlase and her senior pupils., A number of dancers wero present, including grownup girls and others not quite grown-up. Miss Borlaso wore a black v.oilo frock,'and Miss Barbara Putnam woro a frock of'dark, green gauze, with a spray of red roses. Miss Ruth Putnam, pale blue silk. Among the chaperons were Mrs. Jameson, Mrs. Roskruge, Sirs. Butler, Mrs. Gibb, Airs. Mo3s, Mrs. King, and Mrs. D'Oyloy. Some very dainty frocks wero worn. Miss M. Butler woro pale blue mossaline; Miss K. Butler, white chiffon, with a painted floral design;' Miss Bulkley, cream net; Miss D. Bulkley, palo blue silk; Miss P. Hamilton, black velvet; Miss Jameson, yellow silk; Miss G. Gill, white slik; Miss Reid, white slik; Miss E. D'Oyley, pale •blue messaline; Miss Knox, palo blue; Miss F. D'Oyloy, white chiffon taffetas; Miss Warren,, white muslin; Miss Pilcher,: white silk, with rose-coloured sash. Miramar Coif Club. > The opening of. the Miramar Golf Club was fixed for Saturday afternoon, and though tho day was so unpleasant, there was a good attendance, chiefly, of members of. tho club. The mixed foursomes was won by Miss Gray and Mr.. Freoth, who- showed some brilliant play, especially towards the end of the game. Among other visitors who went' out from ■ town wero Mr. and Mrs. Litchfield, Mrs. 1 Macarthy, and Miss Seddon, and Miss Florence Young, who went out with Mrs., Knox Gilmor. Miss Doris Glasgow has gone to Dunedin to stay with her aunt, Mrs. Lusk. Miss M. Cargill, of Dunedin, is visiting Wellington. Miss Edna Pengelly, one of the sisters at Wellington Hospital, has taken the position of matron at tho Nurses' Home, resigned by Miss Berry.,Hrs..E. .Fitzherbert, from Feilding, is staying with her mother; Mrs. Waldegrave. ' Miss .Sommerville has been the guest of Mrs. Deans, at Christchnrch. Mr.'and Mrs. John Gibson, of Ashley Downs, Otago, are spending a week in Wellington on their way to • Nelson, and are staying at the Royal.Oak Hotel... The engagement is announced of Mr P. J. Soantlebury,LL.B.,. solicitor, of the legal firm of Messrs. Mondy and Stephens, Dunedin; to Miss Childs, of Karori Road, Wellington. Mr. Seantlebury was for some years with Messrs. ;'Findlay, Dalziell, and Co., solicitors, Wellington. . ■ General regret will be expressed at the death:of Mrs. Jas. M'Lellan, which occurred on Saturday morning, after a severe attack of pneumonia. Mrs. M'Lellan, ;who came out to New Zealand with her husband more than nineteen years ago, was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends. She had a large family, some of them so young that they.demanded a great deal of her time, but she was 'interested in many matters' connected with her church and charities.
