Weddings. Miss Alice Hollander, the Sydney singer, who has visited New Zealand more than once, was married in London on February 17 to Mr. F. R. H. Carew, of Beddington, Surrey. Miss Hollander has had an interesting career, which'includes a term of study in London and Paris; a tour through the "United States, Australia,, and South 'Africa, and several years' professional life in England. At the Basilica,' Hill Street,' yesterday afternoon, Miss Blanche Thomas, daughter of Mr. Henry Thomas, of Pahiatua, was married to Mr. Ernest Seott. The Rev. Father. Hickson officiated. The bride .wore a handsomo Empire frock of cream chiffon velvet, trimmed with- beautiful Irish tatting raado by the bride's mother. ". She also wore a bridal wreath and veil, and, carried a prayer-book instead of a bouquet. Miss Nina Thomas, sister of the bride, who attended her as bridesmaid, wore a charming' robe of white lace over white silk, and a large white Merry Widow hat with white plumes. . After the wedding, a reception, attended by ■ over sixty guests, was held at the, Hotel Windsor by the: mother, of the bride. Mrs. Thomas received her guests in a smart mole tailor-made costume, with large 'black plumed picture hat. i ': A wedding of considerable interest to the members of tho Church of Christ, Vivian Street, took place at that Church on Easter Monday, when Miss Gertrude Richards, second daughter of Mr. John Richards, of this city, was married to Mr..Samuel W. Cope,' the Rev. J. J. Franklyn officiating. Miss Kowell played the Wedding March. The bride, who was given away bv her father, wore a charming frock of cream chiffon taffetas, with bridal wreath and veil, and sho carried a beautiful shower bouquet. The bridesmaids, Misses Nellie Richards, and Daisy Gray, ,wore' pretty cream muslin frocks and picture hats. The best man and groomsman were Messrs. A. J. Wycherly, of Wanganui, and T. Linldater, respectivelv. After the ceremony, Miss Richards, sister of the bride entertained a large number of guests in the schoolroom. , Miss Richards wore a handsome dress of green chiffon taffetas, with nat to match. During the proceedings, recitations were given by Messrs. M. Glaister, of Auckland, and J. Slack. A solo was given by Mrs. J. T. Hunter, and a duet bV Mesdames Knapp and Lang. ,The bride's travelling costume was brown cloth with nat to match, and beautiful furs, the gift or tho bridegroom. \ s The University Ball. , It was a great disappointment to those''who were arranging for the university ball that they were not r.ble to.,secure a 'large >hall tor the occasion. Thore were hundreds of people whom they would have liked to invite including a great number of past students but because the space at thoi'Concert Chamber is so limited, they had to content themselves with a much smaller list Jiven then there were three hundred'people, present, and, as may be imagined, the hall was crowded. It was a particularly pretty ball. The hall had been decorated with the colours of Victoria College, pale gret'n and gold, lestoons of these colours hung from the centre, cnandel.er to the gallery and walls, and the same colours draped the stage which carpeted and cpmfortably furn.shed. The members of the committee wore kept hard at work looking after the entertainment' of their guests, and very successful they were. The hall was decorated with the-colours of the college dark blup and white, Mirrors were huh" around the walls, and palms, bamboo, and ferns wore aisod lavishly. The supper-room was decorated m -.white and blue, and the tables adorned with, cosmos, miniature sunflowers, and maidenhair fern, and suspended trom the ceiling ahovo each table were baskets of white cosmos, maidenhair, and long trails of asparagus fern, tied with the 013 boys colours black, blue, and gold. All round the walls were hung also old school Photographs. When the ball was opened, two hnndred of -the old boys assembled on the stage and gave cheers for Mr. and Mrs. EmpA??' tin,p^threo ' w , ith tllre « cheers for Mr. and Mrs..-Dove, and another three for the ladies, which seemed an excellent way to inaugurate ; m, evening's entertainment and good fellowship. Lance, Craig, and W. Cunningham are vo bo congratulated on tho success of the ball, which is said to be the finest ever given in Wanganui. University Cirls' Hockey Match. Park, was a disappointing one. So many of tijo Otago team were engaged in tho tennis tournament that only soven players were left, and a *gamo of soven asido is both exhausting and unsatisfactory, especially when the ground is as large as that at tho Park. Both sides, however, did their very best, and play was lively, resulting in a draw, two all. Art Students. Miss E. Perry,, and Miss L. Perry, of Masterton, who have been studying painting at the great' art school in, Antwerp for ,tho past three years, are making cxcollent progross in. tho profession which they have choson. Miss E. Perry, especially, has taken high honours, and both are now studying portrait painting under private tuition. It is'probable that'tho two New Zealanders may go to Paris after completing their Antwerp studies, and they will not return to the Dominion for perhaps another two years. Tauherlnlkau Races. The frocks wor nat the Tauherinikau race meeting on the second day were quite a feature of the gathering. The styles were mostly directoire charmingly designed. Amongst those present were: Mrs. IV. E. Bidwill, in black cloth, with white silk braid; Mrs. Abbott, in a white serge directoire costume and a hat with ostrich plumes; Mrs. W.-Hume, blue and white directoire coat and skirt; Miss Eileen Ward, a cornflower costume with white furs and hat to match;. Mrs. C. Pharazyn, costume of white cloth and white felt hat with a swansdown crown y Miss Brandon (Wellington), frock of electric blue cloth; Miss Elgar,white cloth braided, and large white felt hat; Miss B. Williams and Miss Macdonald wore blue cloth empire costume; Miss Tnrton, saxo blue coat and skirt, with a large hat of same shade with wings;- Miss Fenwick, green costume elaborately braided; Mrs. C. Bidwill, blue sorge trimmed with braid; Mrs. %, F. Pearce, white cloth with a white hat and feather boa; Mrs. Moorehouse (Wellington), Sicilian costume; Mrs. G. Hood, brown coat and skirt and large hat. Ralmerston North News. Easter Monday proved beautifully fine. Tho rain, which came down in torrents all Sunday, ceased in the evening, and a strong wind soon dried the'roads, so that'a number of cars were able, to go through to tho school sports at Wanganui. Among thgSe who went were: Dr. Stowe, Mr. W. L.«Fitzherbert, with Messrs. J. H. and F. Hankins, Mr. ; and Mrs. L. A. Abraham, with the Misses Sybil and Sylvia, Abraham; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Strang, with Miss Miles, Mr. and Miss Goldringharn, Messrs. R.and N. Wilson (Bulls), and Mr. Keiller, with Mr. and Mrs. Russell. Many also went over by train or car to the Foilding races, among theso being Dr. and Mrs. Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. and Miss Pascal, Mrs. Hankins, Mrs. W. L. Fitzhcrbert, Mr. and Mrs. P. Sim, and Messrs. R. Bagnall, Harman, and Reid (Wellington). . Mr. and Mrs. Bucholz (Wellington), with Mr. A. D. Keeling, camo up by car for Easter, and also motored through to the sports. Major Hughes, D.5.0., is in Palmerston. He was in charge of the Riflo Chib camp, and is staying at Wobdhey. Mrs. A. Crawford (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs. R. S. Abraham for a few days. Mrs. Alan Strang has left for.a trjp to Rotorua, in company with Lady Jane Gathorne-Hardy. Mrs. Baldwin, from Palmerston, is staying at the Grand Hotel. . Mrs. .Warburton and her daughter have gone to Waipawa to be present at the wed-* ciing of Mr. Arthur L. Warburton to Miss Elsi© Rathbono. Tho event takes placo at St. Peter's Church to-day. Mrs. Rathbono and her daughter made the journey to Waipawa by motor car last week.
