NOTES ON THE RACING.
Nyland was made a hot favourite for the Waiata Hack, and his backers did not have much cause for anxiety, as he was first away and led till the finish; It looked, however, as if Waipnnui was pushing the Finland gelding in the last hundred yards. W. Young, who roda Nyland, had a fine record during the day, as he.was on the back of throe winners, and also rode horses into second place three times. He was seen, to advantage on Paparaehi in the Hack Welter,, judging the pace to a nicety. Ten starters contested the Mangaono' Stakes, for which Vi and Aberbrothock were the best backed. Neither of this pair appeared to be at homo in. the going, and though Aberbrothock was first away Tie did not last in front for. a furlong. Mon Ami ran a fine race, and at one part had a clear lead of a oouplo of. lengths, but she tired in. the last half, furlong.- Tanekaha, who' has already been a good winner this season, is looking well, and .with his light weighthe was enabled to come on in the soft going, when the othors were' tiring. Oryx and Rookhy made a great finish of the open hurdle race, the former's condition, standing to him at the finish. Bookby jumped well, and is fast coming back to his form of two seasons ago. Showniau was pulling hard over the first, round, but whea tho pace was clapped on lie dropped right out. Xavier was beaten as the last fence was reached, arid he crashed right through it. His jockey, M'Connon,. r.ad a bad fall, but luckily none of his bones- were broken. Finnesseur in the Hack Hurdles showod himself a capable fencer, but over the last two furlongs he had no chance with Itangihaeta, who beat theni all for pace. Ranginaeta was. making, his first appearance over hurdles, and his perforn ance was pleasing. Grenade refused' to gallop after a mile had been covered, aad it is not likely that he will be 'persevered with. ~ ■ ' ' . The withdrawal of' Bourrasque' left nine starters for tho Feildiug Cup. Mahuta was a slightly better favourito than Ilhlaudo and Belario, but after running' prominontly for six furlongs ho dropped back and finished' last. Waipaku set out to make tho pace solid from the start, but Carroll , all the timo kept hor well in hand,' and at tho finish the Conqueror mare was going bottor man anything in tho race. Thero is' no question about her staying ability now, though eho several times failed at tho business end of her races last season. It is in tho autumn that she races best,'.for. last season at this time.sho registered record time for nine furlongs at Awapuni, and' her time for yesterday's race was faster than is usually put up at Feilding. Midian was the strongest favourite of the day in tho Hack Welter, but she was galloped on during tho race, and this may have had something to do with her defeat by Paparaohi. The latter was first away, but Young allowed Liquid Air to tnako 'the pace ■ until throe furlongs from homo, when ho took tho lead again, and had no difficulty in withstanding a challenge from the favourite. Arivoro, a nice-looking gelding by Papakura, showed plenty of pace for five furlouge, but he is scarcely ready yet. The local horso Ecloguo was made favourite for the Halcombo Welter, but all tho other candidates were well supported. Eclogue showed good form, but at the finish ho proved unequal to conceding Flingot Sib., and the latter, who was, slow to commence, won comfortably at tho business end. Sandstream, who was one of the best conditioned horses competing during tho. day, led for over six furlongs, but the weight stopped him when tho pinch came. • Of tho sovon starters in tho Ongo Hack, Siiigor, a chestnut filly by Advance, was given most support. Tho race, however, proved'an. exercise'gallop for Herinia, whb was-in-front throughout. Conquostiria' got the worst of the start, and never got near the leaders.
