MARION CRAWFORD, NOVEi.;:.I. (UT Ttl.EUllAl'lt—l'llESS ASSOCIATION—COI'I'ItIUHT.) (Roc. April 11, 4.15 p.m.) London, April 10. Tho death is announced of Marion Crawford, novelist, aged 54 jcars. Francis Marion Crawford, American writer, tho son of Thomas Crawford; tho sculptor, was born at Bagni (le Lucca, Italy, oil August 2, 1854. Ho was educated at St. Paul's School, U.S.A., and Trinity College, Cambridge. From 1874 to 1878 ho studied sit Karlsruhe, and then for some months at Heidelberg. He passed 187678 at tho University of Rome, studying Sanskrit. In 1879, he went to India to edit tho "Indian Herald," published at Allahabad. Ho returned to America in 1881, remaining tliero until ISS3, when ho went to Italy, whel'O (with the exception of a visit to Turkey in 1881) he had since principally resided, his home being near Sorrento. "A Tale of a Lonely Parish," 18SG; "Saracinesca," "Marzio's Crucifix," "Paul Patoff," 1887; "With the Immortals," 1888; "Greifenstein," "Saint llario," 1889; "A Cigarette-maker's Romance," 1890; "Khalcd," "The Witch of Praguo," 1891; "The Three Fates," "Don Orsino," '"Marion Darcte," "Pietro Ghisleu," "The Children of the King," "A Novel: What It Is," 1893; "Katlwrino Lauderdale," "Love in Idleness," "Tho Ralstons," "The Upper Berth," 1891; "B.v tho Waters of Paradise," "Casa Braccio," "Constantinople," "Adam Johnston's Son," "Bar Harbour," 1890; "Taquisara," "A Man of Yesterday," 1897; "Ave Roma Immortalis" (historical), 1893; "Via Crueis, 1899; "In the Palace of the King," "The Rulers of the South" (historical) 1900, reprinted in 1901 under the title, ".Sicily, Calabria, and Malta"; "Marietta, the Maid of Venice," 1901; "Cecilia, a Story of Modern Rome," 1902; "Tho Heart of Rome," 1903; "Whosoever Shall Offend," 19011 "Soprano, a Portrait," "Venetian Gleanings" (historical), 1905; "A Lady of Rome," IPOG. Among his latest publications arc "The Prima Donna, and "The Diva's Roubv." The late Mr. Crawford was awarded a prize of one thousand francs by tho French Academy ns an acknowledgment of the merit of his novels, and especially of two of them, "Zoroaster" and "Marzio's Crucifix," which wero written in French ns well as in English. He wrote a play, entitled "Fratieesca da Rimini," which was produced by Sarah Bernhardt in Paris in 1902. Deceased held a professional master's certificate from tho Association of American Shipmasters and tho United Slates Marine Board. Ho married a daughter of General Burden of tho U.S. Army.
