HAWKE'S BAY A. AND P. SHOW.
PEOPLE'S DAY. ,school ExrriniTs a feature. (DV TJvLEGIiAI'U—SPECIAL COItHIiSPONDENT.) Hastings, March 31. Tlio Hawko's Bay Agricultural mid Pastoral Society have every reason to" bo satisfied with tlio weather which prevailed on People's Day at tlio Autumn Show. A feature of the show was tho succcss of tlio school exihits. The display forms an objectlesson even to practical fanners, as to what can ho done under capablo supervision, with tho assistance of manures. Umutaroa School. The stand of tho TJimitaroa hoys was exceedingly creditable. Their show included 2-1 .varieties of potatoes, carrots, beetroot, cabbages, onidns, leeks, silver beet, turnips, etc., all grown by tho different classes from a quarter-aero of sliinp;lo soil, divided, into plots. It is generally known that tho sites set aside for school-houses, especially in country districts, aro tlio worst from a farming point of view that can bo found in the locality, and it speaks volumes for the lads' industry, and for tho quality of tlio instruction given them that they\havo been able to wrest such splendid specimens from a churlish soil. Samples of vegetables grown without manure were also shown, tlio contrast between tlicin and tho manured' articles was surprising.' Taradalo, Petane Schools. The Taradalo and Ongn schools' exhibits were also extremely creditable. Ail extra exhibit shown by tho Petano School .attracted considerable attention, alike for tho quality of • tho samples exposed, and for tho.valuable;-.information contained. They showed samples of potatoes, Up-to-Dates, Sutton's Discovery, and Sutton's Ideal, grown under different conditions with-'' out manure, and with different combinations. Tho labels undernealh each exhibit showed' the conditions under whiph the sample was grown, tho yield*to tile nfcre, the proportion, marketable and unmarketable, as well as" tho rainfall between planting and raising. Nino plots wei'o devoted to -this class of gar*deniug. 1 , Fruit and Vegetables. Horticulture is not iicglreted'bccauso, although thero were no exhibits,- a portion, of tho grounds is devoted fto tho cultivation of flowers, and tho fruit and vegetable, displays wcro particularly good. Of ( tho fruit, especially apples and pears, is not too much to say that it has never.bctn equalled in Hawko's Bay, whilst the judgo, of tho vegetables (Mr. Bennett) states tliat theso classes were beautiful, both '(is -regards quality, size, and variety.' Ho had, he said, a most difficult task in arriving at his decision, although ho went carefully through' tlio .exhibits point by point. Ho considered tjiat tho display was most creditable,', not only to tho winners, but to tho losers also. Farmers' Union Exhibits. . Tho exhibit of tho Hastings branch of tlio. Farmers' Union was, in itself, a pocket edition of tho entire show. Thero was to bo seen, arranged with an c,vo ; to artistic cffect, every conceivable articjo produced on a farm .which lias t-o depend on itself for supplies. The absenco of tho'Takapau and Pukctapu branches from tho competition was generally regretted, and tho hope, was expressed that tho society would endeavour to niter tho conditions so as to induco those enterprising farmers to exhibit in tho future. . ° | PRIZE LIST AND POINTS. .
