William Holmes, his wife, and their two children, nged, respectively, four years and two months, were- found dead in bed, Holmes with his throat cut, the others with their heads battered in. The man had used a claw hammer to kill his family, and then committed suicide.

Holmes had been unable to obtain work, and was despondent. It is supposed that ho committed the crime during a sudden fit of mania.
