A rising glass and a northerly wind almost infallibly indicate fine weather m Wellington, and with theso conditions prevailing on Saturday morning, it was decided to hold the pony races at Miramar m spite of the wild sky. The promise of a lino afternoon was fulfilled, and a fairly large crowd attended the fixture. The wind had the effect of drying the track considerably, and the going, if a triflo holding, was not in the least treacherous. Larger fields than usual contested, all the events, and, in the St. Patrick's Handicap, a very fine race resulted in a closo finish between Maid of All Work and Franc, Todd's fine horsemanship securing victory for the former. Maid of All Work also won the concluding event of the day. Unfortunately the running of several of the candidates was unsatisfactory, and it is difficult to sco how the club is going to deal with inconsistent running unless it can devise some means of keeping disqualified and undesirable persons without its gates. It might, however, make more use of its retained jockey, especially when two horses from the one stable are starting in the same raco, and one is palpably a nontrier. ( Ono point, too, that should' be insisted on is that tho jockeys wear the colours notified in the race books. Sixteen bookmakers were licensed for Saturday's meeting, four first favourites making matters rather unpleasant for thorn. On tho two days of the meeting the principal winning owners were: Mr. F. H. Day £78, Mr. J. Fair £39, Mr. P. Blake £35, and Mrs. Wilson £34. Details of Saturday's events are as follow:— TE AEO HANDICAP, of 20 sovs. For ponies LI .3 and under. Four furlongs.— Mr. J. Maid of All Work drew out across the top and led down the back from Anglican, Franc, and Veronique. Franc put in a run at Park Road, and passing Maid of AH Work, led round the homo bend, but stumbled, and Maid of All Work drew level again. A hard race up tho straight resulted in Maid of All Work winning by a neck from Franc, who swerved badly in tho last few yards. Aurifera was nearly two lengths away third. Moata was fourth, Billy fifth, Veronique and Anglican last. Time, lmin. 23 3-ssec.' HUTT HANDICAP, of 20 sots. For ponies 14.2 and under. Four furlongs.—Mr. W. Johnston's b. m.
