SHIELD GOES TO CANTERBURY. . \ •;-,' (BT. TELISGKAI'U—rItESS ASSOCIATION.) 1 ■ . •' : ■'■[..■ . . . Duncdin, March 20. { > The New. Zealand Amateur Athletic Associa- . tion's Championship Meeting was held on the Caledonian Ground to-day. Light rain fell at intervals, but the weather was not cold. The 'heavy'showers of the previous day left tho turf heavy, so that tho lino performances registered ] .we're-a surprise. .The .attendance numbered, £ about. 3000. In the 100 Yards Championship, 1 Woodser, tho Wellington flier, had no difficulty • in ; beating Opio, the Canterbury crack, in the s fast timeof 10 l-sscc. Woodger also won the * '220 yds. I .with ease, his fine stride earning plau- ' dits from.the crowd. Much interest was taken ' k in''the: appearance of Guy Haskins, ex-Ameri- ] can champion, and ha justified his great repu- ' talioii by winning the half-mile from Harding, 5 of, Wellington, and running second in the mile } • to Steele. The 120 Yards Hurdles was a gift to ' Keddell, of Otago. Murray, of Canterbury, ( had the misfortune to clout a hurdle,' and spoiled, any chanco he had of winning. ' The < Canterbury man, however, made amends by 1 winning the Quarter-mile Hurdles very easily. J Iho Mile and Three-mile walks created great 5 interest, these contests being fought out be- 1 tween P. H.' Stubberfield, of Canterbury; and t Fitzgerald, of Wellington. In tho three-mile « Ven J Fitzgerald just managed to get home, but the general opinion was that it was a dead beat: ~ln the mile event Fitzgerald was dis- j qualified for 'breaking, - and tho' race was J m*ij « to tllfl Canterbury • representative. ; J\eddoll succeeded in breaking the standard of i ■he broadjump,, whilo M'Kay had no difficulty ( In'winning the polo vault. In throwingltho 1 hammer, Wallace, of Auckland, was an easy i •first, breaking the. standard. Orbell bad. no t difficulty in winning the high jump, equalling t the, standard.
