Roera Tarcha was charged that, on March , 4, at Duiiedin, he did obtain tho sum of ; £15 from ono Georgo Taiaroa, by moans of a ■ false pretence, to wit, a valueless cheque. Chief Dotcctivo Herbert said that accused had been putting cheques about all over tho ' place, and the police had reason to believe ho had no account to moot'any of them. The position was that ho was a bird of passage. His home was in Napier, and ho said that he was an owner of property in Hawke's Bay, and that ho was related to a ; yen- rich Native lady in that district, and . had ample means. Thcro was a reason to ; believe, however, that this was not so. Ho had been at homo, whence he arrived hero 1 February, during raoo time, and ho j had then been going about town raising I money by all sorts of means and spending it on champagne and cabs. A remand to Friday, March 2G, was asked for. j Mr. Mac Donald appeared for accused, _ who represented that ho belonged to Na- . pier, and was connected with rich people _ there. Ho got him to'telegraph to that I effect to tho Native Minister, who replied that ho had reason to believe that accused had property there. Tho police seemed to ' doubt that accused had property, but ho had that telegram. Leigh Hunt. .SCARLET FEVER. Inveroarglll, March 19. Michael Crowe, a small farmer, was prosecuted by tho Health Department for/ailing to notify two cases of scarlet fever in ' his I family. The defendant supplied milk to a factory, and the man it took tho disease. Defendant's son continued attending school, and another boy who died is supposed to have caught tho disease from him. Tho Magistrate imposed a fine of 20s. and costs, and stated that had there not been mitigating circumstances tho full penalty would have been imposed, tho offence being most serious. , A BOLT FROM PRISON. Dunodlni March 20. Oscar Kisciit, serving two years' imprison- i ment for thefts at Oamaru, has oscaped from the Otago Heads prison works. Dunodln, March 21. Tho prisoner was recaptured to-day at' Portobello, having walked five miles. NEWS IN BRIEF. Wanganul, March 21. A fire, tho origin of which is a mystery, occurred in the store of Mr. John Forbes, jeweller, of Victoria Avenue, lato on Saturday night. The contents, which were insured for £400 or £450 in tho South Brit- • ish, were practically destroyed. Tho main shop was not damaged. Wanganul, March 18. Dr. Withers, houso surgeon at Wanganui Hospital, succumbed, this morning to an attack of typhoid fover, said to have been contracted when treating Maori patients suffering from the same disease. Deceased was 24- years of ago, and had only been in charge about two months, having succeeded Dr. Fergus, who resigned. Tho body is to bo convoyed to his old home, Southbridgo, Canterbury. Cisborne, March 19. Georgo Manns, a native of Mauritius, was charged, at the Police Court to-day with committing an outrage on a little girl. Prisoner denied the offence, and was committed for trial. At a meeting of tho Otago Trades Council last evening, a deputation was appointed to ... present to the City Council a requisition, to which over 3000 signatures are attached, asking that a poll of electors bo taken to determine tho statutory closing day in tho combined Duncdin district. . At a well-attended meeting of about 30 gun sportsmen to-night, it was decided to recommend tho Government to open tho season for shooting paradise ducks in Otago and Southland. It was said paradiso ducks ivcro exceedingly plentiful, and had, in certain localities, notably the Lakes districts, become a nuisance. Farmers there poisoned thorn in largo numbers, but no one was allowed to shoot thorn. About a month ago it was decided to take steps to hold a band contest at Invcrcargill in October next, and a committee was set ■' up to approach the business men of tho town-for a guarantee against loss. It is reported that £250 has been pledged, and that tho prospects for the contest are good. Inveroarglll, March 19. An agreement has been drawn up between Trembath and_ Sanson to run a raoo over 440 yards for £25 a-sido, off scratch, date and placo to bo agreed on.
