Mr. John Hutcheson, who at ono timo represented Wellington City in Parliament, has been interviewed by some persons desirous that ho'should contest the Mayoralty next month. Ho declined tho honour, stating that tho demands of his business would not permit of his giving tho necessary timo to tho duties of tho office. Mr. AV. T. Hambly, lato assistant instructor in wool-classing to tho Christchurch Technical College, has been offered tho position of instructor to tho proposed now class in that subject now being arranged for by tho managers of tho' Mastorton Technical School. Mr. Hambly (says our Mastorton correspondent) possesses, first-class certificates, and was highly spoken of by the Director of tho Christchurch Technical College.
Tho Rev. W. S. Potter, who has been stationed in Auckland circuits for the past 11 years, and is about to leave for Wellington, whero ho will take up work at tho Webb Street Primitive Methodist Church, was mot by a largo number of friends and adherents of Alexandra Street Church, Auckland, and presented with several valuable tokens of esteem. Many speakers testified to tho good work done by Mr. Potter during his stay in Auckland.
Mr. T. M. Macdonald, Crown Prosecutor, who commenced practice at Invercargill in 1862, dropped dead in a cab yesterday morning. At tho rccent sitting of the Supremo Court his son Herbert acted as his substitute, owing to his father's ill-health. A Press Association message states that decoased, -who had arranged to sail for England, leaves a grown-up family. The lato Mr. Macdonald served articles witlr Mr. (afterwards Sir) Frederick Whittakor at Auckland, whero he was admitted to practice in 1861. For a time deceased acted as solicitor to tho Provincial Council of Southland, and then becamo Crown Solicitor for the Southland district. His first wife predeceased him by a number of years. About three years ago ho married again. He leaves a widow and large grown-up family.
Informaton received in Christchurch regarding Mr. Robert Alexander, who was rofcontly appointed director of Lincoln Agricultural College, is to tho effect that Mr. Alexander hails from Londonderry (North of
Ireland), and spent about twenty years cn his father's farm. Ho obtained his diplomas at the College of Science, Dublin, and for two years afterward was lecturer in agriculture, in Londonderry. His next appointment was as locturer on agriculture at Albert College, Glasnovin, Dublin, whero ho also had charge of • tho farm attached to tho college. Ho is reported to bo a first-class disciplinarian, and lias tho faculty of getting on with students under him. Ho is expected to arrive in tho Dominion about the middlo of next month. It is locally considered that ho will bo an acquisition, and a worthy successor to Professor Lowrio, tho previous director. Ho is not only a scientific farmer, but is also a thoroughly practical agriculturalist. —Press Association.
