MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY VETER INARY COLLEGE.
COOD WORK EXPECTED. The Melbourne "Argus" of February 27,, in an editorial article, says: —"The passagd' of the Veterinary School Bill through the ( Legislative Council on Thursday night com-' pletes a most important piece of work. Were , tho Melbourne University being reoon- . sti'iictcd, -there is little doubt that tho primary schools of the University would bo >, those of agriculture, veterinary science, and mining. There is, however, tins advantage in tho late development of the veterinary school, that it is being organised on most admirable linos, and as projected, will bo * equalled by very few" schools in existence. Tho principal feature of the Bill provides for the erection, on four acres of ground granted by tho City Council on tho Pig Market reserve, of a Stock Diseases Research Insti- ' tuto. This will he presided over by the professor of veterinary pathology, Mr. Gilrutlt, and from this department a systematic investigation will be made into the nature of tho various stock diseases which afflict tho sub-human inhabitants of tho State. There will further arise, too, a cortainty of investigation into those complex problems of breeding to which Mendel lias directed attention, which are of the utmost importance to the, economic futuro of the State. Tho annual loss from diseases of stock, and from ignorance of some,of tho principles which underlie the practice of breeding, must be enormous, and we may now look for a gradual reduction in the mortality and improvement in the charaoter of the work done. _ Tho Bill further provides for tho establishment, of a' veterinary school in connection with the University, in which veterinary students-may be ■properly-, and adequately trained. Tho whole will be administered by the University Council, underutho.advice.of..-.a: Faculty of' 'Veterinary Science, composed of equal numbers of members appointed by the Government and by tho University Council. The University freely lends its aid and its reSources totho development of the school, and is to receive no payment from tho' fund except for actual services rendered. All moneys received, whether from Government or from fees, for the purpose of'.the school, will be paid into a separato fund, and disbursements from this fund must bo shown in a separato account. The establishment ol this, the first veterinary school in Australia, is a matter for great congratulation."
