PEOPOSED NEW ZEALAND LINE. TO THE UNITED STATES, VIA ENGLAND. The "Sydney Commercial News" says — A new steamship routo, 'primarily for freight, and ultimately for passengers and mail service {?. P r °P°sfd between New Zealand and tho United States, via West Coast of England ports. Tho details yet to hand show that the, schemo is only in its infancy, but there is everv posslbility of it being entered upon; and at'no distant date. The United States Consul at Bristol, England, who has becomo interested in the scheme, states that it has originated through the present services to the Dominion from America being conducted by tramp steamers, which leave , aud arrive at uncertain dates, and are charging d rate far too high for the service rendered. For a. year or two past steamships have been running between New Zealand and. Bristol (Avonmouth), and of late thoso steamers arc said to have given unsatisfactory service, owing to their inability to keep their schedule until recently. This has now been corrected, with the result that a stsamer is to leave New Zealand for Avonmouth every twentyeight days, and to take not .more than fifty days on the voyage. Another line of steamers running from Australia to Avonmouth, via New 13 .projected every other twenty-eipht days, Riving in reality a ship between New Zealand and the West of England ovcry fourteen days. All that is needed to extend this service between New Zealand and Avonmouth to tho United States is a line, or lines, of steamers coming from tho United States that will atop at Avonmouth aud rosbip the carpoes from New Zealand or give to the boats destined'for Now Zealand fresh freight from the United States. Negotiations arc now in progress between tho Bristol dock authorities and steamship owners by which it is hoped tli.it such American steamships may soon ho supplied, and tho arguments in favour of the success of such an undertaking arc the reports of trade carried on between New Zealand and tho United Stntcs, and tho fact that this trade is constantly growing. From an examination of official Government reports issued by Now Zealand it will be seen that in 1906 there were 14 .steamships sailing from tho East Coast of the United States to Now 'Zealand and ono steamship from tho west coast, ami that 011 the return voyages there were one ship from New Zealand hound to the cast coast nud 14 ships from New Zealand bound to the west coast. It is claimed that on nrrimnt of tho increased speed of tho boats now plying.between Now Zealand and Bristol, and the boats whic); may be oxrectcd to stop at Avonmouth, a saving of considerable tinio may be effected in shipment between the United States nud Now. Zealand, notwithstanding the fact that tho goods are transhipped to Avonmouth. and this would Eoom to favour the clnlme of tho BrUlol Dooks Committee to consideration."
