HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the Hutt County.: Council was-held yesterday, there'being pre-sents-Mr. M.:W.. Welch (in the chairj, and Councillors Lynch, Edwards, Galloway, and. Whiteinan. . — ■;■■-■ ■ Tlie county inspector (Mr. J. W. Cud by) reported having met Mr. Buchanan at Otaihanga,' .and'went , over 'a-road with him. Instead of' 5 ov ?nng_it with loam- where blown out, as decided by the council, he was endeavouring to have.it metalled : for the whole'distance to a'Width, of ten feet.: If arrangements could be made with-, other holders of portions. of the estate' to. raise a loan.for the purpose, the turfing, was to be repaired whore required. Several, other low banks were ' to' be turfedj' as there, appeared, to bea danger of'sand drift-" ing... A" very- dangerous part of the road in the Waterfall Gully had been securely fenced, and the .roads 'through the ■'VVhareroa Riding and on both sides of.thePaekakariki Hill were allin,very good order, also .those, through.'the Horokiwi .Biding. , On the Pahautanui Beach Road some very good work was being done, the sides'of the roads" being • well : taken off ..and. rounded up, in. the centre, thereby improving the'rotd at a small cost.: On the bridge at Judgeford, , near Mr. E. Boulton's property; a span of. 17 .feet needed new'stringers, and- a' portion of'the decking was also very bad. He recoinmended • that these : repairs ,be. done at once at a cost of about .£16.105.- The bridge on the'Wainui-o-mata rifle range at Catchpool Creek had been completed,; and only the filling in of the approaches remained to be done. Some metalling had teen done on;'the back Nai Nai. Road, taking advantage of the fine weather.. In the Mungaroa Riding, a start had been made; to quarry metal for the Whiteman's Valley Road. The lowerlength (No..l).of.the Hiitt-Waikanae Road was in-capital order, but No. 2 length.was.not so good. From the White Bridge to Strand's sawmill,. little-or nothing seemed to have been done for ,& considerable time. . The .water-tables, .at ■ least, should be'cleaned before the wet weather .came.'Of the grants-in-aid-wnrks, -.' the .Thomas-or.' . Huia Creek Bridge had- been -commenced.' the concrete work being now in hand; tho Trentharii •. rifle; range' road work was also making satisfactory, progress. .'The same remarks "applied, to the Plimmerton-Pahautanui 'Road; work.- - . The - other : grant-in-aid-works were nearing completion. ■ .' " ; '■:;. ; ] ■'■;.• . The report was adopted.. ~ .'..■- : . Dr:. Purdy, the. health officer,, reported a case'of scarlet fever at Upper Hutt, and Dr.: (Hector reported a case of-diphtheria at Westlern Hutt, and one at Taita. : ; : ■ ' ';
The; Minister for Internal Affairs forwarded , a . copy:, of the commissioners'..report on the ■ adjustment of-accounts between, the Hutt County and the Eastbourne Borough., The re- ' port .stated. that:the former, should continue, to hold all its real and .personal: .property, and pay Eastbourne as,its.-share .£253 6s. 2d.,: also on account of rates, .£123 19s. Id., Eastbourne" to pay" the county as its-share of the' liabilir ■ties of the. county'.£l3.i 17s. ,9d..: leaving thenet total to be'paid'to the borough',£2« 7s'. Gd. ; The.county also has to .-pay.'. .£ls. 155., court expenses..-.. '".- ' . v - . : ' : The report -was. received.. .. ./-.'■:.•. . The. Railway Department' advised that -in'struotions had been given for the.construction; of the, Hay ward's Ford E.oa'd crossing. •-.", * : '. The Inspector.'of Awards forwarded a speci : men wages-sheet arid overtime-book, which.the ;conncil was required to" keep. Mr'." W." H: 'Field,: M.P:, : advised' that" the Minister for Eailways would- provide a road orossing at Plinimerton for £5.0. ' ■ ;' ■ Councillor Galloway remarked.!that; the" locality was in thePlijnmerton.Koad district at prosent, r and .not in.,the -county.; .■...-*. . <;■ ■ . It was decided to hold the matter, over until, tho Eoad Board'was merged in, the, county.. .A letter was received from Mr. J. S. Smith in reference to'the compensation paid to Messrs. Lynch'Br'os. for.land taken, and.regarding the maintenance of fences, .etc. The'matter was. leftinthe hands of the chairman and solicitor.
