Broken Hill vi'as startled by a liedvy explosion last night. Later, it'was found that tho water main supplying Block X had been 'blown up with dynamite.' POWER TO CALL A GENERAL STRIKE. CONFERRED BY ONE VOTE. ' Sydney, January 15. Tho Sydney Labour. Council has now se-cured-the right to order a general strike without reference to tho various unions. This large power was only obtained by one vote. The new president- (Mr. Thyer) declared himself a Socialist. ' ■ UNION DISCOURAGES VIOLENCE. AN IRRESPONSIBLE - ELEMENT. (Rec. January 15, 9.15 p.m.) Sydnejf, January 15. Block X mine closed down at midnight, since when it has been closely picketed. .Over 600 more employees aro thus rendered idle. A number of mining officials and a posse of police remain in chargo of the mine. No attempt has been made to repair tho damage to the, waterpipe caused by last night's explosion. Plumbers and other workmen decline to tackle ..the job, i fearing that they will be placed on the black list; The Miners' Executive strongly deprecate suoh actions as dynamiting, • and are trying by all means possible to discourage acts of violence and the destruction of property. Thoy blame irresponsible persons who: are .not good unionists at heart. , There are now over 300 police on duty.
OTHER MINES MAY'CLOSE. (Rec. January 16, 0!35 a.m.) Sydney, January 15. Wkilo searching in the vicinity of last night's explosion, another 'bomb, fully charged, with a twelve-inch fuse attached, was found. ■' ■, It is rumoured that some other mines intend- to closo doWn shortly. .
