At a: Canterbury Fruitgrowers'' Association .last night, „Mr. T. W. Kirk, Government Biologist, who attended, said that he would be. pleased if the association would forward to him promptlyany,suggestions or :.complaints, and promised _that he .would .do his host to. remedy any, realgrievances, and-xarry.-iout .any -.suggestions, which he conquered frould'bo for the good' of tlio industry. He would like to know the nature of the association's objections -,to the present mothods of appointing inspectors. The chairmatf'said that it was considered that the'associations should be consulted ' foro appointments were made. „ f Mr. Kirk said that appointments were maEe purely'on the groimds of fitness and merit. Thero were only nine inspectors in tho Dominion at present, and lie was asking that six more should bo appointed. : The inspectors' had been instructed to avoid harsh measures in tho enforcement of the legislation under; which tliey acted, and at present they only issued warnings to thoso.whom they found transgressing. He would be pleased if tho associations would carry a resolution affirming tho necessity for the, appointment of additional inspectors. ' . 'l'lio chairman said that'under present conditions maliy orchards wero not inspected.at all.- More inspectors were apparently requirod. Ho thought that cither the associations should bo allowed to nominato inspectors or that the names • of all applicants should bo submitted, to tho associations; - Sir. Kirk said that tho , Agricultural Department would be glad to receive recommendations of suitable, men from any association, but it would be an impossible position to allow associations to nominate the men who wero to enforce the Act against its members. ; ■ Tho chairman-said he recognised that the case would bo met if the associations were allowed to recommend suitable inen.
