Ghristchurcli, October 28. ; The morning train from Whitecliffs t< Dartield yesterday came to grief at, Glentumiel, the result being the derailment of the engine and some trucks. The: engine, known as the "1)" class, had run into the siding to Jift some wagons of coal - for ' Ciiristchurch, and while it was pulling: out' a rail broke, which caused the engine to leave tlio track, taking two or three trucks .with it. Fortunately there was not much way on, or there would have been considtjr- : - able damage. As it was tlio engine ran ' 1 -' into a ditch alongside the line, tlio foro part getting stuck in a clay bank. . A" big «' gang of workmen was quickly collected, .and' under tho directions of Guard Hill and' Driver Kennerdy set to work to replace the • engine and vehicles. Word having been telephoned to Ciiristchurch, arrangements were soon made for a special to run out to. -\ Glentuunel to convoy passengers and lug-'.', gage to Ciiristchurch,'the special leaving at'.': 11.30 a.m. and reaching town about 1.30 p.m. Owing to the morning being very wot. and cold very, few'passengers wore about, so that not much inconvenience was felt.
