Local business people have decided to oloso their premises 011 the last two daya of the spring show. N . At the meeting of the Half-holiday Association yesterday a matter of some importance to business people outside the chiof ccntres was brought forward. Mr. Furness stated that all' traders suffered mora or less in their business, owing to itinerant auctioneers coming to town and selling goods which he alleged were often of questionable quality. Theso people simply travelled from place to place and paid no rates, and were of no benefit to tho town. He thought it time some action was taken in the matter. Several members supported Mr. Furness, and it was decided to appoint a deputation to .wait on the Chamber of Commerce and request them to take the' matter up as outside the province of tho Holiday Association.

Mr. C. Dormer, of Awaliuri Road, is im« porting a valuable Jersey bull by the Glendevon, which is expected to arrive in Wellington'oil November 15. Tho bull was bred by tho Hon. A. A." Bowman, the celebrated Jersey breeder, of Virginia, U.S.A., in February, 1907. Matters in connection with the proposal for a now municipal hall Feildlng ara progressing. Tho sub-committee set up by tho Borough Council is collecting infor» niation regarding other halls in .the Dominion, and will no doubt lay a report before tho council in duo courso. , ,
Mr. William Darrell, of Reid's' Lino, Bnnnythorpo, died suddenly on Tuesday morning from heart failure. .Deceased was 62years' of age. Tho funeral will take place to-day.. Bowling commenced in earnest on the local green yesterday afternoon. A heavy frost was experienced in the Kimbolton district on Tuesday night, playins havoc with potatoes, pumpkins, and other growing plants. A meeting of the Feilding Hojiday: Committee was held yesterday morning, i, Mr.G. Spence, who presided, explained that tho meeting had beon called to arrange • the holiday for tho Palmerston Show next week. It was decided to close at 11 a.m. on Friday, in lieu of the usual Wednesday half-holiday. A letter was received from tho Wanganui A. and P. Association asking for a holidayto be declared for the' Wanganui Show to be held on November 11 and 12. Association, Palmerston North, to give an exhibition of the boys' work, cooking, etc., at the A. and P. Show next month. , A special meeting of tho borough council was held 011 Monday evening, when Messrs. Charlesworth and Merritt presented the council with two alternate drainage/schemes, one costing £16,000, tho other £19,000, but , these matters- were left in abeyance for tho • present by the council. Potato crops are blackened, and tomatoes, which were being grown extensively, are ruined. A welcome social is to bo tendered the Rev« and Mrs. C. J. Smith by the Anglicans thia week. , Great interest is being evinced over tho coming country election, and many of the candidates intend to deliver speeches at various places. Up to the present Mr. ■ George Watson is the only member-in this riding to 'seek reelection. , ' Road improvements are being effected here, and our town is daily presenting a more upc to-dato appearance.

Thero ■ was a cold snap, on Tuesday, and the Tararuas wore coated with snow. Hoavy, frost on Tuesday night did considerable damago to potatoes throughout tho district.
