It is understood that an appeal will be lodged against the Magistrate s decision to imposo a fino of 40s. and costs on Mr. G. Rankin, assistant to. Messrs. Simpson and Williams, for selling novels that the tho subject 'of Court proceedings recently. It is felt that the judgment is against the weight of evidence in Mr. Rankin's case. It is also probable that tho Magistrate's decision in regard to the nature of the novels will be questioned. "Victoria Cross," tho authoress of "Anna Lombard," /'has sent a cable message from Torquay, England, instructing Messrs. Simpson and Williams to tako action on her behalf. Mr. Fountain Barber, whose assistant was also fined, has, decided that, as the defendant, practically pleaded guilty, no further steps shall be taken. Messrs. Whitcombe and Tombs have, not yet decided whether an appeal shall bej lodged on behalf of their assistant. - YOUNG MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF. Cambridge, October 8. The captain reports he saw no trace of the Loch Lomond or of castaways from her at the Auckland Islands, and that the provision depot, there was intact.
