(BT TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL" CORRESPONDENT.) '. October 8. The new. fog signal at.Godley Head came into operation officially on Monday mornipg, and the captain of' the collier Canopus, which was approaching ' Lyttelton harbour in a dense fog, heard the explosions when nine miles distant, and was guided by them. When two miles from . the land he could distinguish the flashes of the exploding cartridges. •

Subway Wanted,

The Hon. W. Hall-Jones, Minister of Public Works, recently wfote to the .Ashburton Borough Council, in regard to the petition'sent to his Department praying for a subway at the Ashbiirton Kailway Station. The Minister pointed put that a subway would cost £10,000 i and the Department could not see clear, to accede to tho request of tho petitioners. , He would, however, be pleased to authorisp the construction of an overhead bridgo. Tho Council, after considering tho latter, expressed the opinion that the estimate for: a subway was absurd, that the railway. station should bo removed from its present site, and that to advocate an over'bridgo would jeopardise future representations that might be made in /cgard to the question of removal. On these counts, therefore,' the council decided that the matter -bp.,held in abeyance.

But for one thing the outlook for the British taxpayer would bo shrouded in gloom. That thing is that, as nobody has yet 'proposed to cnloroform 'the aged poor, they will have to be supported in some way. The proposed scale or pensions dots not cover any lavish allowance for superfluous luxuries, so that what tho taxpayer has to givo in this direction ho may expect to Save in his poor rates and his charitable contributions.— "Collier's Weekly," Now York;
