Tho Beautifying Association offered to lay down in grass and plants the waste places in the railway yard at Colombo Street crossing, with the object of improving tho Yard's appearance. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones has replied that he quite approves, and he expresses appreciation of tlio association's good work. I lie district engineer will confer with tho association. \ SUDDEN DEATH. Taihaps, June 25. A man named Samuel Graham, part proprietor of a boarding-house at Ohakune. was tound dead in bed by his partner, the body being warm. Deceased formerly resided at Utiku. Death is supposed to be due to heart failure. An inquest will be held. AUCTIONEERS'LICENSES. . ; Wanganui, June 25. A meeting of auctioneers held yesterday and attended by representatives of all. tho firms doing business in the district, considered various matters affecting auctioneers, and resolved:—"That in the opinion- of this meeting no licenso should bo issued for less than a twelve months' period; such period tj bo from date of issue. That in the case of firms taking out licenses for employees oi a member, of the firm, the licenso should be issued to the firm and not to the individual, and that-the licensee be empowered to appoint a member of the firm or employee to sell, provided the licenso is made use of by one individual only in one day, arid that in such cases no transfer fee should bo necessary." It was also resolved that in the event of a universal lialf-holiday being adopted in any district; the Act be amended to allow auctioneers to sell up to ten o'clock on tho .proceeding evening; also that any land agent not an' auctioneer should pay a license fee. " .
HARBOUR board loan. Dunedin, June 25. The average price received for 125 Harbour Board debentures of the new '4|' per cent, loan was £100 Bs. 6id., realising £12,553 7s. BUILDING TRADE IN CHRISTCHURCH '. Christchurch, June 25. During the hearing of the Carpenters' Dispute at the Arbitration ■ Court. this morning Mr. G. B. Chick, in referring to the present condition of the building trade in-the city, •stated that, according-to information he had' ffroni the City Council, there-were 74' building permits, representing buildings valued at £40,430, issued in 1906, compared with 39 permits, representing buildings valued at £53,840, .issued in May, 1908. The higher value of the buildings this year, lie explained, was due to the disastrous fira which occun-ed early in the year. He alleged that the figures showed that there, had been a very great falling off as far as the building trade was concerned.' ■'■■■■■ CULVERDEN ESTATE. • Chrislchurch, June 25. The examination of applicants for the Cul« iverden Estate * sections, by' the 1 Canterbury Land Board closed to-night. Eighty applicants were rejected on examination, and sisteen for failing to appear. Eight applications ■ wero withdrawn, and ■ twelve ■ were informal. Six hundred' and - fifty-seven appli-■ cants go to the ballot, which takes place at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. . *
