. —« 1 THE CONTRACT SYSTEM. [FROM OUR ; SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] Auckland, June 25. At the : monthly meeting of the'- Waihi Miners' and Workers' Union a resolution was adopted asking the mine-owners' representatives to give a definite reply regarding the proposals of the union with' reference to . the adoption- of the-' co-operative system of contracts in mines. The. following reply to the Union's, letter has been received by Mr. Scanlon,'secretary of the Union, from Mr. H. P. Barry, representing the mine officials:— "In reply to your letter, I confirm our promise made to your delegates in conference on the 6tb inst. We will extend to the utmost the'system of cutting our work up into small contracts, and will see that all sign the specifications. This will go a long way to meeting your wishes. We are unable to give up our right to let tenders privately, but shall increaso as far as wo can the calling of public tenders."
