IN PRAISE OF RUAKURA.
A Wairarapa sheepfarmer who has ju3.t come through the Waikato informed our correspondent that ho was wonderfully surprised at the transformation which has taken place at Ruakura, the Government experiment farm. When he saw this'place years ago' it was a swamp, upon which one could sail. a boat; now,, through,' tho' use qf the drain plough, the pastures wore fino and firm, and fed tho best sheep in the district. Tho cost of the draining was Gd. per chain. A paddock treated with basic slag two years ago was now like a lawn. The fanner stated that ho had at different times heard much with reference to_ the loss sustained by the Government 'running these experiment'farms, but ho thought that if the Stato were to realise just now on Ruakura, it would make a substantial profit on its'original outky and the cost of management. He understood, he said,. that. the farm was first bought: for £8000 by the Government, while it was now valued from .£'lo to £70 per acre.
