Mr. Cooke is travelling partly on privato business and partly for pleasure. . Mr. Lowis B. Cooper, of Christchurch, was a passenger for London by tho Grosser Kurfurst. Ho will visit the chief industrial centres, .and afterwards travel in America, t in order to enlarge his business expel iene:o. The . High Commissioner for New Zealand left last wc-ek for Lisbon, where he will represent his Government at the International Telegraph . Congress. The oonferenco began on May 4, and is expected to last several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Fred J. Thompson, of Auckland, have arrived in London, Mr. Thompson having come on. a business visit to the Oldi Country. After spending threo weeks on business on. the.Continent, Mr; Thompson proposes to remain for, nine weeks in this country, aiid then tako a few weeks' holiday in France, Switzerland, and Italy, finally leaving Marseilles for New Zealand by . the Macedonia. 3Jr.\H. D. Vavasour, of Blenheim, is revisiting England, after an absence' of 27 years, -accompanied , by Mrs. Vavasour and t-lioir two daughters. They arrived by the Orontcs 011 April 4, and are now staying in London, '■ which will bo their headquarters during their trip.- They will visit various parts of the United Kingdom, and also tour on tho Continent, remaining 011 this side of the world until, early .in November. In this thoy w-pro both successful. . They expect- to be in Edinburgh . 'for _at least four years to qualify for tho' medical profession. Miss Dora Harman, of Christehurch; has arrived' in London. She left the Macedonia at Marseilles on March 7, and journeyed to Rornd, stayiiif at Nico and Genoa en routo. From Rome she went to Naples, and afterwards visited Florence, Venice, Lucerne,'and Paris beforo crossing tho Channel. Miss Harman will probably spend twelvo months or moro in this country. Privato view day at tho Royal Academy is always full of interest to Australians and Now Zealanders, .'for _ thero is nowadays a certain amount of-curiosity as to who among ,our artists havo found acceptance with the, • judges. This year 21 artists represent the Australasian interests at tho R.A., and tho average quality is particularly good. In two instances Australian' artists have been signally" successful. These aro Mr. Bertram jJ'Eonnal and Mr. Harold Parker, two sculptors, each of whom has had a statue bought by tho Chantry: Bequest administrators, tho prico paid to. each case- being £1000. Tho Now Zealand exhibitors ara Mr. Herbert I. Babbage, Mr. Oswald Birley, and Miss Grace, J. Joel. Mr. Herbert Babbago's "Bateaux des Pomme's " isa.rivor sceno in Paris, with ftotro Dame and tho buildings across tho Seine in ;<i blue haze. Tho cliief objects of interest in the foreground aro threo bargC3 laden with baskets of apples. A'bright green awning over tho contro barge makes a pleasing note of colour.. Mr. Oswald Birloy's portraits aro well up to his usual standard, and shows' that mastery we always expect in tho handling of his Miss Joel's work is a study in the nude, the figure being depicted lying 011 -the grass bewailing tho passing of summer.
