NEW PLYMOUTH KAOLIN DEPOSITS
» (BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) New Plymouth, May 25. About a year ago tho discovery of a kaolin clay-deposit -was made .on a Smart Road farm. Recently a foreign syndicate purchased the property, and placed a strong gang of men on to ascertain, by driving, tho extent of the deposit. The result of three weeks' work shows the deposits to be much more 'extensive than was anticipated. Six drives have been made, eacli 6ft. square. . Ono at a low level-is in 108 ft. without (jotting out of pure White clay. Another-drive, 15ft. higher, is in 88ft., with floor, walls, and roof still of whito clay. Here a shaft has been sunk 25ft., still in the same clay, but improving in quality with each foot sunk. Another drivo of 71ft. shows still nothing but kaolin. In tho fourth drive, now in 62ft., yellow and blue white clays wero first met with; it is liow in white, kaolin. Tho fifth drivo is in 50ft., in similar country. In tho sixth drive crude lignite has been encountered, and a shaft,is to bo sunk to ascertain whether kaolin underlies it.
