Two charges'* were preferred against Joseph Lea (1) drunkenness, and (2) theft on April 27 ,of a pair of winkers valued at 15b., the property of' Ernest Diggs; A sentence of ono month's imprisonment' was imposed oil the -first charge, and on tho second accused was convitted and sontenced to 14 days' imprisonment, the terms to bo concurrent. Frank Evans, charged with having unlawfully assaulted Francis Newman on May 23 'with intent to cause him bodily harm, wag remanded until May 29, bail being allowed in tho suiri of £25, and one suroty of £25. Thomas Lester pleaded 'guilty to a charge of indecency in 'I'aranaki Placo on May 23, and was convictcd and fined £5 and costs os., in default 21 days' imprisonment. - A plea of not guilty s-as entered by John Walsh to a chargc of being tho father of a certain illegitimate child, and having- fiiilod to provide for its maintenance. A remand until May 2!) was granted, bail being allowed in the sum of £25 and ono surety of £25. _ . A .For insobriety Otins. Lawrence was convicted arid fined 10s,. in default 48 hours' imprisonment, and Mary Cahill was convicted and discharged. Fivo first offenders were dealt with, thrco being filled 10s., ono 65.,. and the other being convicted and discharged.
