MAN STABBED IN THE NECK. ■ UNKNOWN ASSAILANT ESCAPES. Whilst proceeding along, Clyde Quay, near . the Baths, about 9 p.pi. on Saturday, a carpontcr named John F. Orr,. a married rpau, residing at No. 1 Hay Street, was suddenly attacked by a strange man about ' thirty years of age, and stabbed in the neck with-a sharp instrument, apparently a penknife. Up to the present the outrage is- surrounded in mystery. Mr. Oit, laden with parcels, was making his way along tho street, when a man camo up and struck him on the side of the head. Surprised at the peculiar, behaviour of tho man, Mr. Orr asked him if lie was mad, to which tho stranger replied, "I will shoot you," and subsequently struck Mr. Orr on the neck. The suddenness of tho attack nonplussed Mr. Orr, who i, for" a moment or two: did >not realise that ho had been stabbed. _ On putting his hand insido the collar of his coat, however/he-found the collar saturated• with ;blood. In' the meantime the assailant stood by, and then walked away towards Courtenay Place, as though nothing had happened. Mr. Orr went at once to the house, of Mr. Ward,'so as not to alarm his own family, and communicated with tho; police and Dr. Elliott, tho latter dressing the -wound, which .is from an inch to. an inch and a quarter deep. The instrument cut through the collar, of the overcoat before penetrating tho flesh. - Neither the police nor Mr.'.Orr"are-able for the outrage, or trace the assailant.- Mr. Orr knows of no one who would bo likely to commit such ,an assault upon him, but thinks that ho may have been mistaken for someone else. The wound is not at all serious. . The matter is' I 'at present in the hands of tho detectives. ■
