' A meeting of the'stewards of the TaratahiCarterton Racing Club, was 5 held oil Saturday afternoon, there being present ir-Messrs. G. W. Deller (in the' chair), L. Nix, J. Hodder, W. H. Frauks, W. J. Denbqe, H. M'Phee, H. Judd, A. Dayshj'H. Rayrier, and H. H.. AVolters. Messrs. Deller, .Denbee, Wolters, and Judd were appointed a • sub-committee > to obtain .the ; services' of an - architect :to prepare'the plans for the proposed stewards'. • stand. Messrs. J. B. Bairstow and Judd ■were accorded a vote of thanks for preparing an 1 estimate of the cost of the work. \ i The Carterton Gun Club fired a- twelveirpund'clay bird match oh Saturday- afternoon, the result being:—H. Jensen .(35), 1; S. Jensen (32),' 2; and J. Reid (32), 3. Ad-vantage-was taken . of. this gathering to present Mr. C. S. Beechey, secretary, with a smoker's 'companion: as; a. .mark-' of' apprecia-.; tion of his . services. : - 1 The football season was opened here on Saturday by matches !: on the. show ground and recreation ,ground. The, match, Carterton v. Red Star, resulted, in a'run-away victory for Carterton, though the game was, not as one-sided as the scores would indicate.. The game,resulted—Carterton 25,Stars 3. Tries for Carterton were obtained by Hall' (2), Thompson (2), Fairbrother, H. M'Kenzie, and Henderson (ono each). Two tries weire converted, W. Hall's by H. M'Kenzie, aud Henderson's by 'S. Mason:' • M'Konzie scored for Red Star, but the kick at goal w - as fruitloss. Mr. A. B. Charters .was referee'. * ' Tlie match, Carterton II v. Red Star 11, resulted in a win for Red Star by 16 to 0. In the match, Dalefield v. Masterton 11, at Dalefield, Dalelield scored 24 against Mas- • terton's 5. ' The,. Greytown Seniors, ..travelling -from Masterton, _ met with a queer mishap just after crossing the creek at Clareville, one of t,ho horses drawing, tlio -bus dropping ' dead. ; ■ Special. services were hold in St. Mark's Church on Sunday evening in honour of St. Mark, the day falling on the Saturday.
