OUR FINANCIAL POSITION.
. Sir,I—ln1 —In .looking over Mr. Jolm Dutliie's letter, in;yesterday's issue ,'of Tiie> Dominion, I find the • following statement During ten years ; we have added £19,215,616 to our public debt." Now, as Mr. Dutliie in this amount has included money borrowed for Advances.'' to Settlers,, by ' loans, to. Local Bodies, the Government meroly act as agents; he would bo equally justified in including the five or six millions, increased deposits in the Post Office Savings Bank for that period. The one is as much a liability as tho other, and- it seems absurd to include theso items in our public debt. Surely, Mr.. Duthie has a strong enough case against our Socialistic-Protectionist Government without leaving himself open to attack in this manner. Although; heartily in accord with tho greater part of Mr. Dutliie's letter, I believe it would be wise to avbid all general statements of this kind, as it only serves to discount an otherwise good case. Trusting you will find space for' this,—l am, etc., , : HONEST INJUN. March 20, 1908.- .
