THE BLACKBALL STRIKE.
Sir,—Mr.....Knight's ' letter in to-day's Dominion is; utterly one-sided and misleading. The: coal miners in the colonies at any rate are hotter, paid than any other manual labour. They have plenty of timo at their disposal for recreation, sports, solf-improve-ment, arid advancement,'also for gambling, 'drinking, and idleness, just - as thyy may choose! I have known a couplo of men working in a placo : or cavil make as much as £50 p£r month when tho pit been working full time. I have luiown coal miners (and all honour tothem),by self-improvement raise themselves to some of ' tho positions in the land! Ono I know is now Inspector of Schools in one • of' tho States; another by winning scholarships worked his way through the Sydney University, and on to Oxford or Cambridge' University in England; Under Socialism all men would have to. be 'equal. Who is,the' most deserving of the sympathy of the Government and people of this colony? Mr. Leitcli,' the individual who finds constant employment and air that good wages brings to ;120 men; or' Mr. .Fitzgerald, the Socialist, who, as far'as I know, never gavo a man a day's work or wages in his life. —Yours, etc., ; ...\, ; truth!
