ONSLOW BOROUGH.
NEW DRAINAGE PROPOSALS. The members of {he Onslow Borough Council present at' tile fortnightly meeting last night were the Mayor (Mr. .1. G. Harkness), Councillors D. J. Watson, W. R. Plimmcr, C. Aplin, B. Lynneberg, I l '. Kiernan, nnd J. E. Fitzgerald. ' • A proposal of the engineer to amend tho drainago scheme' for Kaiwarra by constructing a septic tank in the bed of the stream was approved. Tho engineer also reported that a nuisance was created; at Kaiwarra by poultry getting under tho houses and roosting there. It was decided to call tho attention of the Health Officer to tho matter, and that the clerk draw tip a by-law. to be submitted to the Council, dealing with poultry. A complaint was received regarding a drain at Khandallah, near the railway station, and the engineer recommended that the persons responsible be instructed to abate, the alleged "hmsaiice. .Councillor Kiernan said tho com-' plaint'emphasised the necessity for ii drainage scheme for tho North Ward. It was decided to givo effect to the'engineer's- recommendation.
DRAINAGE SCHEME FOR NORTH' t , ' i WARD.. 3 ] The engineer (Mr. J. Clapcott) submitted a • rejjort .bn 'a drainage scheme . for the North ' \\ ard. i. Owing to .the . greater part' of the V ward being:'sparsely' /'populated,. and in tho : absence .'of -a, water supply, it was intended ' that only .Crofton, Khandallah, and a portion of Nairnville bo included in ; the scheme ' at present. 'The system proposed was for > household purposes only; all storm-water would bo: excluded.. It was. proposed to treat ,'the aew'age. in.'septic tanks, and with upward i filtration, "ana: finally.'to' pass the effluent : through aerating beds, before, discharging it . jntb tnb stream.' The area "naturally ,'divided itself'.into two well-defined' watersheds, tho dividing ridge starting from .Mrs. Alexander's and; going in' an' easterly direction .to the ward boundary. The; north.'or Khandallah' side was served by; Tycr's Creek, and the south, or Crofton side, by the Crofton Stream. The whole area could be very con- ' veniontly drained by" gravitation.. The total number of houses proposed to be coiihected was"110. : The house connections would cost about£ '15' or; £17 each. : Regarding the Crofton scheme, it was proposed to carry . the intercepted sewer along tho main, road. ■ : from tho junction' of Ngatotp' Street to tho. septic tank at the Crofton Stream below 1 Mrs.'Eagle's, property.' As regards 'Khandallah, it was-rccommonded to have a tank on ..the' bank of Tyor's; Creek, below Mr. •Tomsit's house. Tho estimated cost of tho scheme for Crofton and' Khandallah was £3828, which would requiro a rato of a fraction over Jd. in tho pound. The cost of areas subdivided, and not. proposed to bo included at present, was shown as £3296—making ;a grand total of the two 'schemes,/ of £7121. .Calculated in' theso. amounts/ wus also interest on the money, incidental expenses,; etc.'' .
