HOLIDAY TRAFFIC.
THE TRAMWAYS' CHRISTMAS EVE ; . RECORD RETURNS.' ~ On Saturday last the sum of d£sl7 was taken on the City Tramways, which constituted n record; but on Tuesday (Christmas Eve) this amount was again outdone. The figures were not available yesterday, but it was estimated that the total takings would reach about JESSO. The opening of thc'Scatoun line, no doubt, has had soinothing to do with the recent increases, but thoro has been a largo influx of visitors in the last few days, and this has been qno of the-main factors. The takings on Christmas Eve, 190G, amounted to ,£<l2s: Tho trade on Tuesday afternoon and evening was particularly congested, tram after tram coming into the city in the early portion of the night being crowded beyond its capacity, and again lator, when the sightseers, were wending their way homowards, tho same thing was noticeable., Thfirc were no accidents to record, and lio hitches, i THE RAILWAYS. ; Traffic the Railways this Christmas has been exceptionally heavy. All trains that left Wellington on Tuesday were crowded. At Hie Thornclo'.i (Government) Railway Station, 1500 passengers booked "for all stations, and about a similar number entrained at To Aro. The special that 1 left Wellington , at/11.45 p.m. for Napier, was a particularly lengthy, one, and, every available seat was occupied. Tho incoming trains were similarly crowded. It is ofliciully estimated that the returns this year will considerably exceed those of last Christmas holidays. On tlie Wellington nnd. Alanawatii Railway Company's line tho experience was the same. Tho Tuesday night special, leaving at 11.15 o'clock, had a full and heavy lond. The majority of the passengers were booked to Palmorston North and stations beyond. The traffic on this lino also has, so far, been heavier this year than la«t.
THE FERRIES. ■ The Wellington Harbour Ferry boats were well patronised both on Tuesday and yesterday. On Tuesday evening special late boats rail from town to Day's Bay, Seatoun, and Karaka Bay. The traffic yesterday would, nu doubt, have been heavier had tho day been inoro'promising. Several special , boats will run to-day to tho various resorts.
