THE POPE PROTESTS.
VISITS TO ROME.
THE VATICAN AND THE KING. DY TELEGRAPH—TOEES ASSOCIATION— COPYRIGHT. (Roc. Dec. 25, 10.13 a.m.) Monte Carlo, December 24. Tlio Princo of Monaco lias accepted an invitation to visit King Emmanuel of Italy at Rome. The Popo has entered a protest similar to that addressed to ex-Presidont Lonbct. POSITION EXPLAINED. Tht: incident, referred to in connection with President I/jubet provoked much attention in tlio suring of 1900. The Kind of Italy is considered as an enemy of tlio Vatican, by reason of his holding possession of its temporal dominions, taken from Pius IX in 1870. The late Pone Leo never failed to assert these temporal claims of the Papacy, and the present Pono has followed his example. Catholic savuroigns were' forbidden by a decree of a former Pono to visit him in his capital. In lOOli President Louhot, of i'rance, paid a visit to King Victor Emmanuel in Itomo, in return for a visit ivliicli that Kuler had made to him. Tlio President notified tlio Pope of his intention, and stated that while in Home he would also call upon Ilis Holiness. Despite the protestations of many iVcncli Catholics, and tlio President's representations that a refusal by the. Pope to receive Uim v would unite the antiGatholiu section in France, tlio Pope denounced the visit, and declined to meet the head of the Republic. His action was severely blamed by non-Catholic critics as showing an entire lack nf political judgment. In tho eyes of Roman Catholics, ho only indicated an important principle, which tho Church could not, surrender.
