Bookmakers and the Totalisator. '.'. As I predicted, about a week ago, tho 'bookmakers' 'appeared ''at the Manawatu "Racing' - Club's' meeting, and Carried on business' 'inTO"pp_Qßition't6 tho totalisator. Saturday was tho off day of the mooting, and, if tho weather is fino on the next two days, the totalisator returns should he greatly in excess of those recorded on the first day.- Last year's figures for the off day wcro £13,395, or £2481 more than SaturThis ~ year's .loss may be ac-..eountctlffoi-j by/tho- presence of the book*maker3,"/bVt'lt "is'possible that some of it ,|i}ay' be attributable to a small attendance, and mismanagement, delay in announcing tho scratching causing trouble Tho pencillers opened double books early in the day, tho combinations' comprising tho \'Sunin}Or;tand*;Avra})uhi : ;;Han'dicaps, i Summor Handicap and Himatangi AVcltcr, and Awa/puni; Handicap and Himatangi Welter. \ With double hotting they would ( cach require to hold an average of £77 'a raco to aggregato £2480, and if their returns wero up to that standard they should have made good profit. Tho President of tho Racing Conference was taking note of affairs on Saturday, and it will bo interesting to see what opinion ho expresses on tho subject when the conference ,next meets. • '

rivi'ee'ting oiffthe<'S'fewaTfcfs. ■ :/.The Steward's of .tho Manawatu Racing Club-had appointed a judicial committee to dook'after' the racing on Saturday, and re''port'in'any malpractice, that occurred. '--No 'Cascsiof. 'foul riding or inconsistent running woro reported to the Press on Saturday, but tho Stewards held a meeting after tho Summer Handicap, which lasted somo considerable time. Though no information of {this :was given to tho-Press, I was able to -glearf'somo/details uihofficially. It appears that ono of tho Stewards (not on the, judicial committee)'-imagined he saw a horse pulled in ;,the Summer Handicap, and consequently asked for a meeting to be hold. Tho .Stewards,, hoyovor,;. wcro ■ evidently not in 'agreement on"'t-Ko m'atttr, as they asked no questions of anyone concerned. Tho Timekeeping, "'•'' Tho timekeeping on Saturday was very erratic. A Croat', Horse and'aCood Jockey. If Elevation was a favourito boforo Saturday's race, ho was doubly so after tbat event, ahd.ho, fully jdcserved the enthusiastic cheers 'which greeted •■him'on'his return to the birdcage. When ho set out after Oxton and Sir Frisco, his .chanco of catching either of tho pair looked-"hopeless.,,, When he had covered a couplo of furlongs it dawned on tho crowd that ho was.reducing tho gap. Ho quickly passed Oxton, and strido by stride gained on Sir Frisco. Tho latter responded gamely, but lleid was ridinga great raco on Elevation, and, after a splendid 'finish, ho won by a bare neck. Waipau ran badly, and never looked likewinning. Pantaloon was prominent when a milo had been traversed, and was going faster than anything, hut boforo tho straight was reached tho black gelding- closed up suddenly. Tho scratching pen was freely used in tho Maidon Hack, but tho final field consisted of oloven horses. Penates was fractious at tho barrier, and lost his rider boforo the start, but ho was quickly caught again. Ho again showed a great burst of 'speed, and lasted longer than usual, for he was not headed until insido tho last furlong. He is improving every gallop, and is particularly fast up to fivo furlongs. Titoko and Hippolytus ' wcro quickest to begin in tho Maidon, but they were quickly supplanted by Penates. , Hippolytus was pulled up at tho bottom of tho courso, and ho was found to havo burst a blood-vessel. Tan San was the best horse in tho fiold, and ought to' havo won. He had a nasty position tho wholo way, and put in his run vory late. At tho finish ho was only half a length behind tho winner. Later.on in tho day he appeared in the Terraoo Hack Welter, and again showed'.rare finishing powers. . Mou Ami ran well for half a milo. She is a half-sister to St. Paul. Crucinella, who finished second, is a half-sister to:Nonette. Tho Summor Handicap proved an easy .task for 'Morrie-Roso.'■ She took tho lead about 'fifty yards after tho start, and placed a big gap between .herself and tho field. None of tho other candidates wore ablo to get witliin half a dozen lengths of her. at any stago. Tho .official timo was given as -lmin. 44sec., but tho.raco was probably run several seconds faster. Chatterer was tho public fancy for the race, but the paco set was too good for her, and, though sho was fourth at ono stago, sho appeared to bo in trouble tho wholo way. -Uenuku, by his Wbodvillo running and his performance on Saturday, is in improving form. Grand Slam was never very prominent. Lady Disdain, who put up 71b. overweight to secure the services of L. Wilson, ran a fairly good-race,.-but.never had a chanco with tho threo placed horses. Tho Palmerston.North Stakes brought out fivo candidates. The race would havo been a very tamo affair but for a poor start, which loft Elevation and Sister Anno a long way in tho rear, and set the former what appeared to be aii impossible task. When one-third of tho journey was covered, it was soon that the San Francisco colt was fast making up ground, and tho finish was consequently unexpectedly exciting. ' .' . [ Oxton showed poor form, and at tho end of fivo furlongs ho appeared to be well beaten by Sir Frisco. St Albert proved equal to 'winning tho Tiritea Hurdles from ond to end. Haifa milo from, home, Lull'raced up to him and created a little excitement, but, when tho right timo came, Jack O'Connell shook his mount up, and'ho won vory easily. . /Dusky Morn, who had been doing track work equally as good as that dono by Elevation, was expected to win tho. Awapuni Handicap, but tho Sou'-westor fielding failed to sccuro a place. Going down' tho back, ho ran into the fifth .position, ,and. eventually finished fourth, but . he was more than' a length behind tho placed division. •'Balla'rat was ono of tho quickest to begin, and immediately ran.into first place.. Sho set a merry paco for fivo furlongs, but then succumbed to tho successive challongos of Splendid Idea' and Lord Soulfc. ■••■,■ Lord Soult did not'begin as well as usual. Full Rato never.showed up. Splendid Idoa is probably better than ovor sho was. Since tho Feilding Meeting sho. has boon doing good track- work, and sho looked in boautiful condition on Saturday.afternoon..' '~. Gauzo ..took.the;lead -in .the. Hack ■ Welter,' and .led to tho straight. .Considering her heavy impost, .her performance was a good one, but at the finish she was a g"ood way behind tho first pair. ... Buoyant was always in a nico position, and appeared ,to havo something in hand at tho finish. His win was tho second during, tho day for tho progeny of Captain Wobb. In tho Himatangi Wolter, Whakawehi ran very poorly, and finished absolutely last.' Prism was going well at half tho distance, but did not see tho distance out. ' Tho finish between Martyrium and The Rand was ono of• tho best during tho afternoon. Passing tho Stewards' stand, Martyrium'appeared to bo going a littlo better than The-Rand, but w-hen tho latter was called on ho finished gamely, and.gained tho judgo's vordict. TROTTING AT PETONE,

• The Hutt Valley Trotting Club, encouraged by the success of its, winter trotting fixture, has launched out, and the summer meeting, which will open on tho Potono trotting ground on Boxing Day, is looked forward to with much interest. The course and appointments have received every attention, and high-class trotting may bo expected by those patronising the mooting. The acceptances aro numerous, and includo a strong team from the stable presided over by Piper, of Riccartoiu Vitilla, a Vanelevc maro, though still a maiden, ran a fast race at the recent Dmiedin Trotting Club's meeting early this month; Arbitrator, with 3sec. advantage in the handicap, defeated her by about half a dozen lengths in 2min. 31 l-ssec. for the mile. Myall, the third member of the team, is a maiden mare, lately purchased by a local patron af Piper's stablo from the New South Wales breeder; J. S. Auckland. Myall has never raced, but as her trainer has engaged her with tho smin. 35scc. class at the'Plimpton New Year's Day trots, ho must have a fair idea of her pacty Piper comes in chargo, and will drive his horses himself. This trainer will bo represented by Ossio Woods (a top-notchcr), Highball, a maiden trotter, and the fashionably-bred two-year-old trotter Baron Luegen.
