ROWING.
' PROPOSED REGATTA. A general meeting of the Wellington Rowing Association was held last night for the purpose of considering tho advisability of holding a regatta in Wellington. -Mr. A. S. Biss, chairman,' moved "that this meeting of rowing men pledges itself to assist in wording up a Wellington regatta, to bo held on February 29, also that an effort be made to collect funds for prize-money." Tho Chairman was of opinion that the innovation would be in the right direction, as too much' had hitherto fallen ou the Committee. Ho considered that the success which attended the Christchurch and Wauganui regattas was due to the fact that every oarsman in the towns mentioned took an interest in the regatta. If a movement on these lines was commenced in Wellington he was sure it would grow. They Hould require about £100 for prizes, and about £20 for other expenses. He would like to see members pledge themselves to collect £120. Mr. M'Nilly seconded the motion, and considered that in a large town like Wellington there should not be much difficulty in putting on a regatta and giving good prizes. They should put their shoulders to the wheel, and make the Wellington regatta the. finest-in New Zealand. . The motion was carried unanimously. ■ Collection lists were distributed amongst those present, and a vigorous canvass is to be entered upon at once. 011 the motion of the Chairman, all present were formed into a Committee to push alon? the affairs of the regatta, with tho Council of the Association to act as an Executive Committee to look after the detail work.' STAR CLUB RACES. ' The. Star Boating Club got off tho semi-final for the senior double sculls and the final for tho junior doublo sculls yesterday evening. Brewer in tho final to-day. Junior- double sculls, final—G. J. Wilkinson (stroke), H. D. Bridge (bow), defeated Gtedhill (stroke), W. Doughty (bow), by a length. Turner (stroke), R. Newbold (bow), were ..three lengths away. A meeting of the Star' Boating Club was held in the Boathousa last evening, Mr. C. Pearce, captain, occupying tho ohair. It was decided to hold the annual swimming sports as usual, and to leave the date of the gathering to a special committee. Recommendations were thrown out that the sports should be held early in January, also that an iriter-club race should be placed on the programme, and that the members of the Wellington and Petone Rowing Clubs should be asked to compete. With a view to encouraging distance swimming, it was suggested that a quartermile race should be held. The following Committee was set up to make arrangements for the sports:—Messrs. G. S. Matthews, 1 G. C. Girdlestone, A. Hollis, C. Johnston, B. C. Freyberg, E. Johnston, H. E. Anderson, L. A. Maichant, and A. T. Bendall. -
