THE NEW JERSEY BULL.
HOW HE WAS.PURCHASED. Tho Jersey bull, whoso release from Somes island and dispatch to New Plymouth' for Messrs. Griffiths and Cornwall wo recorded last week, is an animal on whom great hopes are centred. He was chosen not so much for show ring points as for his true dairy pedigree, and it was with that object in view-that he was sought for in the Island of Jersey. Jersey! Island has the reputation of. having never bred a tuberculous ■ animal, a reputation which has an immense.' commercial value in these days;,and Messrs. . Griffiths and Cornwall wore therefore vrell advised in their action. They wrote to 'ihb' secretary of the Jersey Cattle Association of \ Jersey, asking him to make the purchase'for them, and tney are well.*satisfied with, his choice. The bull he choso, named Oakla&ds' .' Champion, is twenty-two. months old, and rather darker than we are accustomed.to .see. in New Zealand. He had been used as' a yearling in the stud of one of the leading , Jersey breeders. Ho is a grandson of Gol- . den Fern's Lad (said to be the best 1 bull . in the Jersey world), and son of Sultan of Oakland (said to be the best bull on Jersey; Island). His grand-father on the" data's side (Eminent II.) recently* realised £2000 in America.
