Tho mctlicnl evidence given at the tria! of Mr. and Mrs. Goold, charged with the murder of Mrs. Levin, was to tho effect that Goold was a degenerate, arid'not thoroughly responsible for his actions. The evidence also showed that more than one person participated in the murder. (Hcc. Dec. 5, 10.45 p.m.) Monte Carlo, December 5. In the case against Mr. and Mrs. Goold, both accused were convicted. In the case ot Goold, extenuating cimunstances were found. He was sentenced to hard labour for life, and his wife was sentenced to death.. Goold is an Englishman, ami his'wife if said to be a Frenchwoman. Tho: murdered womar was Mrs. Levin, n Swede. Goold f confession—of which he gave several, versionswas that he struck and stabbed the woman, his wife only helping to stifle the cries, Tho victim's body was dismembered, and parts were put in a trunk. Tho motive seems to have been murder, but the whole trogedj is sodden with alcoholism,' at any rate, .sc far as Goold himself is concerned. The gambling aspect has given rise to a renewed demand'far the suppression of llonte Carlo President Falliercs lately reprieved feolleilland, who outraged and murdered n little girl, ate three other convicted murderers, and unless the consequent public outcry has had s moral effect, Mrs. Goold will probably escape the death penalty, as tho President's attitude is considered equivalent to abolition of capita] punishment. A poll taken by a Pans newspaper indicated 1,-112,000 opponents to the reprieves, and 328,000 supporters.
