She was of 7400 tons burden, am valned at about .£150,000, exclusive of a cargi ■0f... coffee, \rliich was also very valuable. B; a rather remarkable coincidence, the Bethania belonging to the samo line, took fire on tin same night. The cause of the outbreak is no known. Tho Rotoniahaua held the lead for a considerable portion of the journey, but heavy weather came along, and favoured tho Manuka, which arrived about half an hour earlier, than the forry boat. !' "Master Mariner" writes: —"I understand that tho Marine Department is making enquiries as to the most suitable for tho erection of a lighthouse on the East Coast, north of Auckland. My opinion is that the first light should be placed on the North Capo and should bo situated on the West King, i.e., called the Kings Group. Tho West. King is tho nearest point of New Zealand to Australia, and a first-order light' at an elevation could bo seen distinctly almost right round seaward, a distance of thirty-six miles; of course, no light can be depended on in fogs. If this light were established, most certainly a fog' signal should bo provided." METEOROLOGICAL. WEATHER AT- 5 P.M. Manukau Heads.—N.E., breeze; barometer, 10.08; thermometer, 76. Fine; bar smooth.
