PETONE NEWS.
The I?cv. B. Metson, Primitive, Methodist minister at Petone rocoived a call to labour at Wellington South, but declined, a unanimous invitation lioing given to remain in charge at Petone for another'year. In connection with the Doll taken at Petono on Wednesday, which resulted in a majority of eight for the direct ronto for the proposed bridge over the river, Mr. Piper, in speaking to our reporter, said ho did not think it such a groat victory, and ho was not so euro but that a decided majority was. in favour of tho route by way of the esplanade. The extraordinary voting paper issued wns likely to mislead, a number of voters. On the other hand, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. -M'Ewan) expressed himself pleased witli the verdict. Personally, he had not been greatly .concerned about (he matter, in so far as it related to two main routes, but under existing conditions the esplanade route was noithor desirable uor practical, and for that reason he strongly opposed it. The Wellington City Council, being anxious to commence the bridge, does not want any further delay, and hopes to have the work well in hand before the winter sets in. He (the Mayor) intends asking the Council to agree to a confcironco with tho Gear Company, and hopes that a reasonable assessment will be corns to.
