ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.
THE NIMROD DESCRIBED. (BT TELEGRAM—SFKCIAI, CORIiESPONUENT.) ; , Chrlstchurch, December 5; ■ The Antarctic oxpeditiqn ship Nimfod ishow in dock at Lyttelton undergoing a process of scraping and cleaning, of which she was mucli in need. She is one of the smallest vessels that have been docked at Lyttelton for' some. time, and does not occupy much more than a third of the length of tho dock. Mr. Miller, shipwright, of Lyttelton, who has charge of the docking, says that hor hull is in a remarkable condition, considering the groat ago of the ship. She was constructed of the very best timber by a firm of groat oxperionco in the building of whalers and sealers, and sho is practically as. good to-da.V as over'she was.: The heavy- sheathing ,of ironbark and grcenheart on tho hull bears marked signs of strenuous exporiences. The timbors aro scratched and scarred in numerous places, and some are grooved and worn by tho pressure of the ice. The stom of, the-, vessel has a heavy iron piaw.right down to. tho keel, and the bows are sheathed with stout iron plates for several feet abovo and below the water line. Tim jull is a splendid modol. Her bow is very similar to that of the Discovery, but otherwise sho resembles the Terra Nova, although hor lines 'aro tar. better. The .Nimrod's hull is. very fine aft,, much nioro so than one would expect in »;. vessel of hor class. . . ' .',
