AUCKLAND'S NEW POST OFFICE.
; CONTROVERSY AS TO THE SITE. > (BY TELEGRAM!—STOMAL CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, December 5. Controversy has started in connection with the new post-office sito selected by tho Premier. In his remarks at the social tendered to him last evening, Mr. C. H. Poole, j;" M.P., referring to the criticisms levelled n against the site, and the contention that r- the Government should purchase another, n asked why should wo allow ourselves 0 to bo legally plundered when the people of the back blocks are almost swimming for „ the want of roads and bridges? " A public meeting, convened by advertisement, was hold at. Sir G. Grey's . statue last night to discuss the action of the Post- , s master Goneral in. selecting tho railway, re- !_ servo for the site of the new Post Offico h building. Mr. Richardson said that ho had convened the meeting because ho considered i, that, whilo the proposed sito was an admir-. . io ablo one for a new railway station, it was. t not central enough for a post offico. Auckland was entitled to both a new. railway, stan tion and a new post office. Ho then dis(l cussed the position of tho post offices in y Sydney, Melbourne, Dunedin, Christchurch, J and AVollington, and said that all of them ). were centrally situated. This sito, howover, [ was on the outside of all the population d which was daily increasing in other direcd tions. ITo, then submitted a motion protcstr_ ing against the railway site being used. ,f The motion was seconded. An amendment to adopt tho sito selected was moved by one . of the audionco and seconded, but was lost 5* by a large majority.
