LEPROSY IN NEW CALEDONIA.
'.Considerable excitement has. been.-caused in Noumea -by the publication of --a" 'letter date -from l.aoue. It deals w-ith tho increasing prevalence of leprosy in New donia,. and somo of the/statements are really alarming. Tho writor states lor .the, last ten years he. lias made a careful and scientific study of this terrible scourge in the, French' colony. For 22 years he has boon a. resident of the neighbourhood of Ponorihouen, where the diseaso has' made fearful progress., He says that for various'reasons he. has refrained from writing'on the, subject; but 1 he now considers it his duty-to-raise, a cry of alarm m order to attract, the attention of those in charge of the public health. He affirms that unless precautionary measures bo taken New Caledonia will soon become a vast lazar house. He says that amongst some of the native tribes 75 per cent, are lepers, and that thoy ' daily mix with; tho colonists who aro ignorant 'of-tho danger so incurred; and further that somo tribes have become. extinct through this cause. The matter is being taken up by tho French paper published at Nountoa,; which denounces the, authorities for their indifFeronee to tlie subject which it says threatens tho health, comfort, and very existence of the colony.
