WOMAN RECEIVES ORDER OF MERIT.

The King has conferred the Order of Merit on Miss Florence Nightingale, who is the first lady to receive the Order. Tho Order of Merit, established in 1902, has been conferred on eighteen men—the Empire's leading Generals, Admirals, scientists, and men of lotters, also the Japanese Generals Yamagata and Oyama, and Admiral Togo. Miss Nightingale organised the nursing in the Crimean War. She is Lady of Grace of St. John of Jerusalem, and has publishod several works on nursing. <
