LETTER CARRIERS' OUTING.

The Wellington Letter Carriers' staff held their first annual picnic and sports at Day's Bay on Saturday afternoon. There was a large attendance of officers of the Postal Department and their friends, and all thoroughly en- / joyed a pleasant outing. The events) on the sports programme were keenly contested, and • the finishes were close and exciting; There were eighteen entries for the Letter Carrions' Cup, 220 yards. The condition of the-Cup is that it has to.be won two years in succession or three at intervals.' HailRoom Officers' Cup, 220 yds., same conditions as Letter Carriers' Cup—A. J. Hollis (syds.), 1; Lloyd (scr.), 2. The ladies' raco was won by Miss llallett; Mrs. Clare second. The Post and Telegraph tug-of-war competition ■ between 'teams of eight men a-side was won by the Letter Carriers' A team, captained by Mr. F. Buck. The Mail-Room team, captained by Mr. . J. S. Johnson, secured second place. The final pull between these two teams, which waj evenly contested, evoked great enthusiasm. The variety race, which caused vast amusement, was won by Mr. G. Lloyd and Mrs. J. S. Johnson. The Post and Telegraph Challenge ;up and gold, medal (tho cup to be held for a year, the medal becoming the property of the winner), WO yards, was won by Mr. G. Lloyd . (5 yds;), mail-room. Mr. Lochead'(loyds.); mail- \ room, second. The letter carriers' one mile walk was won by Mr. Miller, Mr. . Warrington being a close second. . Tho visitors' race, 100 yds., was won by Sir. M'Gir. , -At the conclusion of the sports, Mr. J. Johnston (officer, in charge of letter carriers) thanked the officers of the other branches of the Department, and the public, for the encouragement they had given'the letter carriers* first picnic by their attendance that afternoon. Mr. G. B. Diill, before making the presentations, expressed tho pleasure he felt at being - present at the successful gathering, and complimented the letter carriers on the excellent' programme they had arranged. \ The proceedings were, brought to a close with three clieers for the.
