November 30. Mr. A. W. Barnes, Government Veterinarian, and manager of the local abattoir, is leaving for a neiv appointment in the North Island. Ho is being replaced by Mr. G. Ford, assistant meat inspector at Islington. The prospectus of tho proposed freezing works has been circulated, and the promoters of the scheme are hopeful that the company will bo successfully formed. A good deal of interest has already been aroused in the country districts, and many leading farmers speak enthusiastically of the undertaking. At tho next meeting of tho Nelson Education Board, Mr. William Lock is 1 to move that, in the opinion of that.body, the College Board of Governors should ho made elective. It is understood that a majority of tho members of tho Education Board are favourable, to the proposal. Tho Bishop of Nelson leaves shortly for England to attend the Lambeth Conference. During his absence, the Bishopdale Theological Collegio work will be suspended, and tho house will be closed. ' Many of the local orchards give promise, of a largo crop of, fruit this season, hut the long speil of dry weather is beginning to be felt, and many farmers and fruit-growers aro looking anxiously for rain. Another of Nelson's earliest settlers has passed away. Mrs. Harriet Henderson, who died at tho age of 79, came to Nelson with her parents in November, 1842. For many years she had resided in Marlborough. Tho Rev. Robert Elder, of the' Argentina Mission, has been on a' visit to this district, where ho lias lectured on behalf of his'work in tho Argentine Republic. A report comes from Aniseed Valley of a now find of valuable copper ore. This is in tho neighbourhood of old workings, ami several miles from tho property of tho M'aortland Company. Samples seem to' indicate that the oro is very rich, but it remains to be seen whether it exists in sufficient quantities.
