MAORI'S-NEW RECORD. The;. Union Company's new turbine steamer' Maori, as was predicted, lowered the Eyttelto'nWcllington record last trip. Tho conditions for record-breaking were not as favourable as when tho Mnhcno was declared first. During the Voyage of the Maori from Lyttellon a fresh north-easterly wind with' sweil was experienced. Notwithstanding this, tho new vessel lowered the Mahcno's record of 9 hours 5(1 minutes, by 25 minutes. Thero seems to bo a dispute about a minute in the times taken by the chief engineer and the captain of tho vessel. The .Maori also, lowered her previous record from heads to heads by six minutes, bringing this down to 8 hours* 41 minutes. :The following are a few exceptionally fast passages from Lyttclton Heads to Wellington Heads:— February 2-4, 1904—Mnraroa, lOhrs. 40min. .'March 1, 1904—Manuaka, lOhrs. 30min; February, 1904—Rotomahana, lOhrs. 35min..March 4, 1905—Winimera, lOhrs. 30min. March 24, 1905-Moeraki, lOhrs. 16min. : December 15, 1905—Maheno, 9hrs. lluiin. '■'.Tho Hanroto left Dunedin for Westport on Wednesday, and is expected to leave there today for Auckland. Captain E. R. Stewart rejoined tho Koonya at Westport on Wednesday, vice Captain J. Robertson, who comes to Wellington, for orders. Captain Sellars has taken command of tho Westport collier Regulus, vico Captain Lobb, who rejoins the Canopus. The Taviuni left Dunedin on Wednesday for Westport to load coal for Wellington. After flischarging, she returns to Westport to tako in bunker coal, thence she proceeds to Auckland, from which port she is expected to sail on December 12 for Flint Island with excursionists and scientists, this island having been selected as the base of operations by a of scientific gentlemen who are desirous of. pursuing some astronomical investigations there. Flint Island lies -under tho equator about 400 miles N.N.E. of Tahiti, and tho party will remain there for a week or ten days before returning to Papeete. At one time tho island yielded large quantities of phosphates, but as the deposits became exhausted the island was planted with cocoanuts, copra being now the principal export item.
